Hi Everyone,
I have suffered with migraines on and off ever since I was about ten. I started getting them when we lived in Singapore only the doctors then initially diagnosed me as having billious attacks.
As I grew out of puberty they diminished for a while, and really to be perfectly honest I get no more than about two a year.
I just wondered do any of you suffer with migraines?, and do you have similar symptoms to me. I get them with no warning at all, I had one this afternoon whilst typing on the forum, my vision is just blocked with flashing lights, until I take two of my tablets, and then in about half an hour the flashing lights go, but I am left with the worst headache.
I keep hoping that at my age, they might have gone for good, but no such luck.

I suffered really bad migraines for many years... hospitalised twice! and injections by the doctor were the only thing that helped when i was in the throes of one. Laid me low for days... with sensitivity to light smells and noise ....really really bad I often thought I would rather die. Having given birth three times I would rather that than suffer a migraine. However, about 10 years ago I was prescribed betablockers for the headaches and they stopped!!! BRILLIANT...I still get a lot of head aches but a couple of pain killers will usually do the trick these days. I get a bit cross when some folk refer to all head aches as migraine...bit like people who call a cold flu!!!

No solutions either ,sorry,
But lots of sympathy. Like Splash, it infuriates me when people complain that they get migraines, when they obviously dont.
The rare times when I have had them (and I can remember every one!) they were either connected to travelling or pregnancy.
And if someone had offered to chop off my head with a blunt saw, I would have been grateful!!

OOOOOOOOH Splash here we go again! another coincidence!??
I started having chronic migraine when I was nine I would have one at least three times a week until I was 14 I had course of injections and from the time I was 15 I probably only had two or three a year, by the time I was 20 I maybe had one a year, occasionally I get a series of them lasting over a week, the Doctor felt it was the same migraine not going away, she prescribed Sumatriptan, they are brilliant, as long as I take one as soon as my eyes go, the symptoms are hugely diluted, I'm neurotic about carrying them everywhere, they are £25 per pill but worth every penny. Oh I wish I'd had that as a 9 year old, the symptoms then were just as bad as the ones I now which fortunately are rare. My symptoms are exactly the same as yours Plasmo, I also get numb fingers one by one, bizarre, and I am unable to string a sentence together.
As to whether you grow out of them Plasmo, my Mum and Dad were both sufferers, My Dad always had them and my Mum only got the eye interferance as she got older.
I too get annoyed if someone with a bad head calls it a migraine, I wish I was a headache sufferer!
All I can say I totally sympathise it is the most distressing awful complaint.

So strange Sunbeam all these coincidences !..... I have also had Sumatriptan....but since the betablockers, which I still take daily ,I have been ok. My eldest son suffers too....feel so sorry for anyone who has them regularly. Mine started when I was pregnant and I had on average two a year and sometimes had clusters that lasted for a week or so.

I get them ocassionally - start with one eye going strange-not blurry but you'll know what I mean-and then everything else kicks in and then I'm left feeling wiped out for ages after and sickly. Horrible!

Yep, Im another one who grew up with them, the whole works, visual disturbances, numbness, cant speak, vomiting, and would take about a week to recover, I also got them in clusters, one after another after another, until I wanted to end my life.
I kept diaries to pinpoint what I ate, drank etc, but nothing was obvious.
I tried every medication available, even had to inject myself at £30 a shot, but nothing helped, they took over my life completely.
I then asked for meds that would prevent them, so I started on a few, antihistamines, betablockers, but then I got my life back.........
I started on Amitriptyline, and I havent had one in 4 years!!
So please dont suffer girls, there might be something out there that might prevent them for you too.

I echo what MJM has said ....dont suffer keep on at the medics until something helps you ....dont suffer....life really is too short.

OH was getting them virtually every week until he started on Amitriptyline last Easter and hasn't had a single one since.
I get about two hours warning when I get a migraine - everything feels distant to start with then my focusing starts to go. Afterwards I feel vague for several days (if I don't I know I'll have another one within a day or two). I used to get them every month without fail but since I switched to a different contraceptive pill I've been a lot better.

I have had 2 migraines in my life, with flashing lights on one side.It went after paracetomol and a nap.
No idea what causes it.

I get them just before a period - one flashing light - the brighter the flash, the worse the headache!
Due to happen over Xmas. Drat!
But, actually reading what some of you go through, I probably don't suffer too badly in comparison.

Hi Girls,
Thought the migraine I had on Wed might just be the one of the two I have a year. Dont usually have them a couple of days later.
I will pop to the doctor on Monday as I cant understand why this has happened.
I will mention the tablets that some of you have mentioned and see what she says, I dont fancy having more over Christmas at all.

I used to get quite a lot of migraines until I invested in a tempura pillow. I get the odd one now, hardly any. The pillow has been a god send.
I hope you stop getting them

Hope the Doctor gives you something Plasmo, I feel so much more confident these days knowing that if I take my Sumatriptan, I can hopefully get rid of the worst symptoms and if the worse came to the worse and I was out somewhere and an attack came on I would probably be able to get home once my eyes cleared.

This is spooky Plasmo,
mjm had her first migraine for years two days ago after posting here and I had my first for years today, while I was out shopping with my D.
mjm and I have said we are never ever going to mention the M word again
To all who suffer, I hope you find something that helps keep them away

I get them but for me they tend to be diet related. I am allergic to peppers and if I am unlucky enough to have them in my food, that is what will start one off. Also I have noticed that if I don't have enough complex carbohydrates I can also get them then.
It's only my personal theory that diet might affect lots of people (as well as it being related to hormones, tiredness, stress etc) and that keeping a food diary might help.
The last time I told someone about this she said that her daughter got terrible headaches but that she did eat peppers like apples!

Slightest whiff of dark chocolate sets off a migraine with me, so I second Waveney's diet theory!

I find the light at this time of year can often induce a migraine - something to do with the lowness of the sun in the sky and the yellowy light. I don't usually get them badly but have had a couple over the past two or three weeks.
