I've been waffling on my blog (instead of cleaning out my bathroom cabinet) this morning about what makes a house a home. I'd be interested in your thoughts!
Comfort, smells, flowers - anything else?

Definately atmosphere - comfort and cosiness, I think. But it could be a cave as long as the people who live inside are the right mix...nothing worse than a beautiful home, all the mod-cons and no love and affection.

Cosiness is hard to define, can you give an example? Also, what about a cat! Our house is definitely more homely now we have an old cat living in it - the fur everywhere adds a certain je ne sais quoi!

Photos, pictures, things we have chosen or made and which reflect our personalities and experiences (eg travel). My house is lived in, lots of books and photos, twiddlers nightmare when it comes to dusting! We have friends who like the minimalist look - very tidy but their house feels like a house to me, not a home. Everything I look at is something that makes me happy - apart from the litter tray!

Great answers! I'm definitely lacking in the photo department and my pictures look very outdated. I like the minimalist look too so maybe that's why things aren't as homey as I'd like.

Hard to quantify!! But the people in it first I think ...love and kindness and a place you can kick off youir shoes and be warm and comfortable. Lovely fire, cosy cushions ...candles I love candles... and light them as soon as it is dusk! Plants ,Flowers,Lamps..... a prtetty garden to look out on. No pets for me....much too allergic.Photos of loved ones all over the place and the Grand childrens paintings and drawings decorating the freezer and fridge!! Home is where the heart is! xx,

In my home I think its a comfy sofa, an open fire, photographs, warm colours, candles, the sound of laughter and not being to obesessed with everything having to be just so.

Ah, now, if you're talking specifics, it would have to include my bookcases stacked with books and photographs, my kitchen with it's pots and pans and industrial sized foodmixer and my husband laying cherb-like on the Great Bed Of Ashbee...

Hard one this as teh fair me thinks it's all down to personal taste, but when I go somewhere so minimal even the kettle is in a cupboard I wonder what the person is trying to hide. To me a home is the people in it firstly, when the children are at their grandparents it's too quiet and teh heart of our home has gone. Still have the dog, cat, hens, G.pigs and Rabbits though. It's also a place where you can fully express yourself so ours is filled with colour adn vintage ephemera and well lots and lots of noise. Lastly you know it's a home when you shut teh door and don't feel any need to go back out there again. Beige sterile houses worry and depress me adn I need to leave them pretty quick.

Mrs twiddle (love the name by the way)
It has to be the people in it, and this is coming from a complete Hyacinth Bucket! After living briefly with a stepmother (see My stepmother is an ALIEN) who would literally mark the milk bottle with a felt tip pen to check consumption (Yes truly), and who served me with a rota for the use of the kitchen to cook my evening snack after a long day at work, and who actually had a Little Black Book to record 50p borrowed to buy some stamps, I soon learnt that it was the people and not the expensive furniture and grand reception rooms (that she had) that make a house a home. BUT, grumbles aside, I would say, it,s keeping things clean and aired, lots of photos of family, friends and fun times, nice smells set a mood (the new Mulled wine Airwick plug-ins are great). Loads of cosy cushions and throws, heaps of books and magazines (if you are a bookworm like me) or generally surround yourself with things that make you smile even if your collection of scary dolls is not cool, or your fluffy poofe is not currently de rigueur!

Clutter, worn patches on the hall carpet from all those feet in and out, the odd knock in the paintwork and of course two dogs under our feet. I can't feel comfortable anywhere that's too tidy or too perfect and like my home to feel lived in.

For me, it's definitely the people in the house that make it a home- plus any pets, of course. I also don't like places that are too tidy/clean/perfect.... if a place looks lived in, that appeals much more. I'm not saying it needs to be dirty- just relaxed! I think you can turn a house into a home with very little, in terms of 'things'... warmth, affection and people do it for me....

I do listen to you all! I spent what felt like half a day finding photos of family to grace the bare dining room.
Thanks, it looks much more homely in there along with a few big plants to soften the square edges

I'm sure it looks lovely Mrs Twiddle.
Will be putting my Christmas Cactus in the dining room either today or tomorrow,I've been nurturing it to come out in time for Christmas, and the buds are just about ready to 'pop' open.
Last year it flowered in November!!
