Please can anyone tell me if they have read this book and wether they enjoyed it. I read The Island by this author and thought it was gripping and brilliant although harrowing in places. I was eagerly awaiting The Return and now a friend has told me she found it dull. Any comments ladies?

I've just finished reading The Return, and have to admit I didn't like it nearly as much as The Island. It's set during the Spanish Civil War, and starts out quite well, but then does get rather dull when the war bit starts and it seems to just go on and on about the hardships suffered by people in that period, and the various battles, and how the main characters walked vast distances across Spain to try and escape the conflict.
If you have a particular interest in the Spanish Civil War you would probably find it interesting, but I did find it rather tedious.

Thank you so much for that Karen ....I have no interest really in the Spanish Civil War so I think i will give it a miss!! I just needed a second opinion .There are so many books i want to read I dont really want to spend time on something which sounds rather tedious! Again many thanks!

I almost bought this book at the weekend but decided I must get my 'pile' down a bit. So glad I didn't. Hope she isn't going to be a 'one hit wonder' as I so enjoyed The Island and would like to read more like that

I really enjoyed it! the love story aspect and the social history also. I didnt know that much about the Civil war and so I enjoyed finding out whilst reading a good story. I'd recommend it.

Hi, I'v just finished reading The Return,it took awhile to get into it and I must admit I missed out chunks of description as I found bits went on a bit, but, I did enjoy it. It taught me a bit about the Spanish Civil War which I have to admit I knew absolutely nothing about.

I absolutely loved it, found the first few chapters hard to get into but after that could'nt put it down. Found it interesting and informative if not abit gruelling. I think books are so individual and I know I'm in the minority as I absolutely hated a thousand splendid suns it was the most depressing book I have ever read and it was used as paper for my log burner. I fail to see how the return can be more depressing than that.!!!

I read this book a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I read The Island and was not disappointed by The Return. It is written modern times but reflecting back to years prior to the Spanish Civil War, the freedoms enjoyed by all. Then into how the war divided comunities and families. It is very well written and the characters are believable. I have also read Winter in Madrid by a different author and found that The Return was a lot easier. I would highly reccomend this book as I knew nothing of the Civil War in Spain and found the historical aspect fascinating.
