Ramblers - quick question
      #231273 - 25/10/2008 08:40

Hi ladies

am just starting to get into walking, its something I have always wanted to do and enjoyed the odd times when I have managed to go. However, I want to get more into it, and wondered whether the Rambling Association was a good way in?
Am a little concerned as I am a single woman, and meeting groups of mixed couples can be somewhat daunting.
Any members out there? Any advice you can offer?

many thanks and best wishes x

When I contacted my local group I found the walks a bit too advanced for myself as a beginner. They did put me in touch with another walking group in my area that aimed for shorter walks. It might be a good idea to contact your local library to see if there are any other types of walking groups in your area if you want something more at a beginner's pace. I don't think the fact that you are a single woman should put you off - everyone is there for the activity and they are not necessarily part of a couple. With the scenery constantly changing there is always something to talk about with people and quite often there is a stop at a local pub for lunch. It is a very social activity and a great way to meet people from all walks of life.

Don't be afraid to join a rambling group, you will not feel out of place being on your own, your local library will have details of walking groups, not all walking groups want to join the rambling assoc., these groups may interest you better, as they will do probably shorter walks, and day and evening ones.

Happy walking

Hi Bumblebee,

I joined my local Ramblers group and went on a few walks with them which I enjoyed. The ones I did were about 7 miles long and most of the walkers were late 50's, early 60's so a bit older than me but very nice and friendly all the same. I didn't feel at all out of place as a single woman, there were plenty of others on their own. Apparently the younger people go on the really long walks so I am hoping to get a bit fitter and join them! If I discover any fit men, I'll let you know. Ha Ha

Penny

Hi

I joined the Ramblers five years ago and although I like the longer walks there are quite a lot of options. I live in Lincoln but also join the Horncastle, Boston, Gainsborough etc crowd and all make me very welcome. As a single woman I never feel on my own and everyone is so very friendly, couples talk as often as singles and as we have walking in common it is very sociable.

Go for it and at least have a go.
