Has anyone got one? I don't know what they're actually called but the steam part is part of the iron(?)! I've heard they're really good and makes the ironing a lot easier so thought I might get one. I looked in Argos and the prices start from about £50 - £200! I know you get what you pay for but do the dearer ones make much difference? I'd be interested if anyone has one. Thanks,

Hi Bluebella
Do you mean a steam generator iron, the iron sits on a base that you fill with water? I have one of these, Russell Hobbs and it is fantastic, I don't even mind ironing now! It takes half the time and is so much easier to get the creases out.
One word of warning though, they do make a lot of water so I always put an old towel on the floor underneath the ironing board.
Still hate putting the ironing away though!

Hi Bluebella, yes would highly recommend one but don't buy a cheap one as they aren't as good. Mine was about £90 and yes, it sails through the ironing in half the time so a good investment! Not so good if you suffer like me from 'power surges' (hot flushes!) - phew, all windows open, back door etc.,!!!

Yes Calico, that's what I mean. How does the floor get wet - the steam? They sound good and I'm even more tempted to get one now but still not sure if a cheapie is as good, or I'll get more if I pay a bit more. Spanishlady -your one was VERY cheap! I was also thinking of getting one for someone for a christmas present. Is there any special features I should look for?

Yes, it does generate a lot of steam, hence the name I guess lol. Makes the floor wet and steams up windows but still worth it.
Mine is the middle of the price range and is great, cant really see how a really expensive one could be any better. I would go for a name you know and trust, also make sure that you are able to buy replacement filters for which ever one you choose. Had mine for about 2 years and only had to replace filters once but they wont work without them.
Hope this helps.

Filters????? I didn't know you had to buy filters for them. How much do they work out roughly?
Sorry for so many questions!

Sorry, I can't remember how much the filters were, I got them ages ago, not expensive though. As I said, have only changed one so far so they last for ages.

Asda have a good one at around the £60 mark. They really have come down in price a lot over the past year.

I paid £90 for my Tefal Pro Express, worth every penny. Cuts the ironing time down to half and does not make the floor wet or steam up the windows.

i have a philips one, no filters, i've never had any excess water on my floor.i bought mine about 3 years ago and it was about £100 then, i couldn't go back to an ordinary iron now, my ironing takes about half the time and you aren't constantly filling it up. i can iron for about 90 minutes without it running out of water. look at the output when you buy one, they differ quite a lot.

Hi there everyone
I am thinking of getting one as well, and would like to know if the base unit (I suppose where the water goes) sits well on the ironing board, or do you have to upgrade your ironing board as well?
Many thanks

I have a Tefal 'protect' one. There is an inbuilt cover so I can put it away immediately after use. Good if you have kiddies too I would think.
It has no filters but a clever hose rinses out the boiler bit to avoid limescale build up.
HTH!

to sit one on your ironing board you'll need to get a board which has the bigger stand to take it, i had to buy a new one. you can always sit the base on a nearby work surface and just put the iron on your board, it's just easier to put the whole thing on the ironing board especially if, like me, you iron in the lounge watching tv and drinking wine !

Hi, I bought myself a small press over a year ago and think it is the best thing I have ever bought, it halves the ironing time and whizzes through sheets, dont know about the new steam irons, not sure if I could cope with all that water
