I never had a great sense of smell, but over the last couple of years have lost it completely. My GP says it's not nasal polyps and gave me a nasal spray which i have used for months, but no difference. Of course there are much worse things that could be wrong, and of couse the up side is that I am spared horrible smells.
However there are times that it actually leaves me feeling very frustrated and quite low. Today i went to a garden centre with my D to browse the Christmas things and she commented several times on the lovely Christmasy smells. I love Christmas and feel its quite sterile without all the lovely spicy aromas you associate with it.
The other things is that I can't smell if something is burning and get paranoid in case the house smells of dog, and other things like that. Am constantly asking my family if this or that smells OK. It has also affected my sense of taste and I don't enjoy cooking anymore as I am worried I will oversalt, or whatever.
Does anyone have a similar problem? Does anyone know of other things I might try?

Must be pretty awful not to have sense of smell or taste, and I am sorry I cannot suggest anything you could try to help, has your own doctor not sent you to see an ear nose and throat Consultant who would have a better idea than your own doctor what to try best wishes Scottish lady.

I have often thought having no sense of smell would be an advantage when i see what comes out of my sons PE bag each week but what you have described must be awfull - i didnt realise it would have such a big impact on your life. There must be a specialist you can see about it - maybe try a different GP first. Best wishes.

Hi Sula-Milly, sorry I cant give you any advice as I have no personal experience of this but I thought this little story might bring a smile. When I was a little girl my dad came home one Christmas after working for almost a year in Sicily. He brought mum a box of glace chestnuts as he knew she loved nuts but when she opened them we all thought they were vile. We my poor Auntie Sally arrived to give us our christmas pressies and dad offfered her one of these gorgeous sweets (forgot to mention she had lost her sense of smell and therefore taste a few months previous). All evening he plied my aunt with these horrible things till the box was nearly done and then he very kindly told her she could take the rest home. Hope noone palms any vile sweets off on you, only eat things you know you like.
On a more serious note I do hope someone has some positive advice for you and you get your sense of smell back. My aunts did eventually return but I dont know how long it took as I was only litttle.

My Mum has no sense of smell. She lost hers after a trauma many years ago and has never regained it. I think it's 'just one of those things' for her now. Can't really help but hope you find some solace knowing you aren't alone!!
