A wonderful gift for our 39th Wedding Anniversary, a subscription to W+H, which was very eagerly perused from cover to cover. But why oh why nothing for the expatriate community? There are so many British people living abroad now that it is disappointing to feel we appear to be neglected. Or have I just been unlucky that there is virtually no mention of anything for overseas subscribers in February's edition?

Don't worry, evianers, you get used to it! On a more serious note though, it would be a good idea for them to include us properly every now and again, but judging by the complaints from non-Londoners, W&H finds it difficult to move outside London and surburbs... Shame though.

Living in spain for part of the year and working here to enable me to do so, I take magazines back to spread around. Would love to get in touch with more people via forum.Agree articles about issues for expats would be welcome.

Hi everyone, Yes, I feel that the magazine is sometimes very "English" and south England at that - am I wrong or is there very very little mention of Scotland, Ireland or Wales and yes, like you, I too live abroad and it would be nice to have a mention now and again about British people living in France, Spain or whatever....where I live there are quite a number of British women, of all ages and when one of us goes to the UK, she always brings a copy of W&H and it is passed around the group - we all love reading news of the UK, the fashion and we all miss Marks & Spencer - gosh how I miss that shop.... So come on W&H, a little more thought for those of us who live abroad.. bye for now

Having read about the problems of late with getting W&H delivered, I think a subscription isn't such a good idea..... But, trying to get hold of W&H where I live has taken me months!!! So, I finally got the last issue, and now hope that I will get the next issue..... I too live away from the UK, and I too think that a bit more attention should be paid to the many readers residing elsewhere...

Re: missing M&S- oh, me too! And John Lewis.

Better stop, I'm getting carried away with myself, it's nearly time for bed and I'll never sleep!!!

OH NO!!! The reason I read W&H is because it IS British!! I would not be interested if it was about British women in other countries. That doesn't make sence to me. I live in the states and if I see something about the states in W&H or the other British mags I get then I am not a happy camper. I can read about the states in the million American mags. Keep W&H British...please!! I need my fix!!!!

Hi eastendersfan
I think you are misunderstanding me (us?)- nobody thinks that W&H should become UN-British! It is British(thats partly why we buy it) and of course we want British things in it- not overseas stuff. However, it would be nice sometimes to recognise that there are quite a few readers who live outside UK, and a passing mention would be nice. Not talking about taking over the whole thing! I think its nice to read about other expats occasionally and how they cope etc. Thats all!

Hello All!
You DO get used to it! But why not include us from time to time? We could, on the other hand, organize an event ourselves, like a Foreign Forumers Fling in the UK complete with Bacon Butties, Shopping Spree ...and a W&H Makeover added on by the W&H team as an article subject (subtle hint)
I'm now going to be daft enough and say anyone interested?

I might have to join you ladies as there is a possibility that, due to my fiance's career, we might have move to Luxenbourg. I have no idea what life is like over there as have been only once and in all honesty it looked pretty but very dull and dead. I'm told that most people that work there live either in Belgium or France or Germany but how do you find out where which is the best place and what kind of community is there? I tried searching the net but did not get much at all. Have any of you lived there or know someone that has?

Hello luckyonelol my daughter's brother-in-law lives in france and works in Luxembourg - apparently living is cheaper in France but salaries are better in Luxembourg, so he goes over the border everyday to work. Don't worry wherever you end up you'll like it - do you speak French ? German ? Flemish ? -also check up if there is an english community too, it helps you settle in, you might be quite surprised how many of us Brits live abroad.
also Pinkannie - what a great idea - foreign forum get together with a make over by W&H thrown in - even more (or less) subtle hint.... bye for now

Hi Douaigirl
Thank you for the info. Yes I do speak french and that would help. My fiance's job would be with an american agency so they must have something organized for the poor lonely wifes I'm sure. I just wondered if anyone knows of any quaint villages on the french side near Lux. Also what kind of entertainment/cultural and otherwise one could expect there? Coming from near London that has so much to offer I worry that I would be bored to tears overthere.

hello again luckyonelol, aie aie aie !! if you're hoping to find a sort of substitute London, you may be a wee bit disappointed ! However, don't worry, of course there are some beautiful cities and towns - even villages - to visit - and live in and since you speak French, which is great, you'll be able to continue going to the cinema, theatre... France is a very "association" country, so you'll find everywhere, sports clubs of all sorts, dancing clubs, I don't know, you name it, you should find it - unless of course, you choose to live in a very small village...which has it's good points too, I suppose, like walking or cycling...you could give English lessons and meet people - will you be working ?

Douaigirl , I see what you mean. I think that I will probably be living in a small village but as I do enjoy hobbies like art and photography plus love hiking and cycling and outdoor sports I will find things to do and see. I think that I will miss London though! Even my beloved Rome does not equal London. In fact I can't think of any city apart from New York perhaps, that can offer so much! Do you enjoy living in France? What area are you and was it difficult to make new friends?

Living in a different country is very exciting at first, everything being new and to be discovered, like being constantly on holiday..when I arrived in France I didn't speak too much French, so making friends was complicated, but as time went on, my French improved & I had children which helped me make friends and now I know a lot of people - people tend to remember you more 'cos you're foreign and a little "different" - and some good friends, most of whom are French, and for a long time that was enough, but a couple of years or so ago, I felt a longing to meet more British people, and so went looking for that and have found quite a big British group not too far from where I live, so have joined the group and take part in some of the activites when my job allows it. I was amazed at the number of Brits living abroad. I live (sorry to be a little vague....)near enough Paris to be able to go for the day, but also have access to the TGV (very fast train) for London, and also near enough Brussels and Bruges and the coast..so a rather nice and interesting area.

Sorry if my reply is a bit delayed to being an expat and W & H. I am a Scot living abroad, even when living in the U.k. W&H was very South East, never mind taking on board an audience from abroad! After reading the article about the forum and a reader in Italy meeting up with another (this got me foruming), I think that a make over on us expats would be fantastic. Maybe not just a make over, but how we have adapterd in our adoptive countries!!

Hi
What a great idea.... a forum fling back to blighty!!! Count me in!! Bacon sandwiches, M&S, John Lewis, I could go on forever....sigh....
Luckyonelol, what I did when I moved here was join the British Club and also the American one, they were absolute godsends to me when I knew no-one, nothing and nowhere..and didn't speak the language. To begin with I went to every thing they did, until I found my feet a bit and could be more discerning. I'm so glad I did this, it made the move so much easier for me. Have a look on the web and see if you can find the ones in the area you are moving to. They may be able to help you with areas to look for accomodation etc. Good luck!
