I am 54 and had an early menopause at 40 which I sailed through. After 6 months of back pain I have just been diagnosed with Post Menopausal Osteoporosis. I would consider I have a healthy diet and exercise regularly. T he doctor has put me on calcium tablets but just wondered if any of you ladies out there have any tips for me

Hi GillyG and

to the forum.
I'm the same age as you and began my menopause at 37, which was horrendous. My doc suggested some form of calcium supplements to be prevent early onset osteoporosis. I regularly take Osteocare and they really work for me; they have strengthened my hair and nails but I don't know if they would be strong enough for you. Sorry I can't suggest anything else but I'm sure there are other ladies on here that will be able to help more.

I have been told that often the calcium in the tablets its not easily absorbed by the body and its flashed out when you go to the loo. I have started taking something from VIRIDIEN which is a powder I dilute it in water and it is a mixture of Calcium Magnesium and Zinc. Vitamin D is also important for bones, if you get a chance sit in sun (with plenty of protection) and also look out for food that contain calcium and avoid food that minimize the intake of calcium. Before taking anything like Viridien mixture though consult your doctor (dont take my word for it) or ideally a nutritionist (a reputable one). Hope this helps

You will need to check the dosage of your calcium tablets as the body will only absorb 500mg at any one time. If you have a bowl of cereal with milk for breakfast & take a tablet (if 500mg or more) you will lose some of the calcium down the loo. Also no good taking 2 tablets together in the morning as most of us tend to do because that's when we remember!!
