Just watching the Remembrance Service on BBC1 - well what I can see of it through the tears. Not good at watching these services Cathy. Wearing my Poppy and thinking of all those men away in far-off countries etc and wish there could be peace. aec x

May i join you all,as a mother wife and carer, in remembering all of those who lost their lives and those who are injured in mind or body inthe service of this country. As a researcher into WW11 and the Peoples War, may i acknowlege what a close run thing it was against Hitler and the Axis powers. My best wishes to all those families who are still involved in the service of this country.xxxxx

I have just spent the last 3 weeks putting together a whole school assemby on rememberance day as this is some thing I am very passionate about. Im not a teacher just a teaching assistant I wanted the children to understand the significance of the poppy and to know that when they see one it reminds them of not only the men from the previous wars but also our service men and women now.
I also buy the family poppies every year and my son attends two services with cadets one morning one evening.
i think it is important that we always remember.

Thank you for this thread Cathy, Rememberance Day means a lot to me. My father was Royal Navy (Motor Torpedo Boats).
I thought that you may all like to read the poem from which those famous line were taken.
For The Fallen With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain. Laurence Robert Binyon, 1869-1943
Laurence Binyon wrote these lines whilst sitting on the cliffs at a place I know and love in Cornwall...Polzeath. These days so popular with holiday makers and surfers, enjoying life, a life that we owe to those we will remember. Not just today, or tomorrow, but for the rest of our lives.

Marina that was very moving. As you know my little soldier came back from Afghanistan three weeks ago, safe and sound. My heart goes out to all those families who have lost loved ones.
Lots of tears tonight I think.

Its the first time I have missed the Rememberance Service in many many years, but I was out. I think its very important that we all realise the sacrifice made by so many young men and nowadays more woman as well. My father was in the RAF during World War 2, so I salute all those who have died in the service of their country and also their families.

This year I havent bought a poppie , usually I have been able to gat one from a fellow expat but this year I have not seen any . I feel realy bad that I did not manage to buy one as I have bought one every year since I started school. Can I say what a wonderfull idea the school assembly was as a child of parents who lived through the second world war I have allways known the significance of the poppie and taught my children as well but I do not think that younge people realy understand .

We went to our local service in the town square this morning, and it was a bigger turnout than ever. There were REME soldiers parading, recently back from Afghanistan, and it was moving to hear the respectful applause as they marched along the High Street. For the first time this year local schoolchildren read out the names from the war memorial. So many names, and it will certainly make me more aware of the memorial as I pass it each day.

What a beautiful piece of writing,Many tears shed by many people thinking of all those poor families who have lost someone close. found last night very moving and shed a lot of tears. It is important we remember and we tell our children. I teach year 2 and I always spend an afternoon teaching them about Remembrance Sunday. Oh and I went to the 65th d day celebrations this year and had the priviledge of meeting the veterans. What amazing tales they had to tell. One old man landed on Pegasus bridge strapped to a young Paratrooper. As they landed he shouted'I am back!!' My Dad fought with the Royal Marines and we are very proud of him, God Bless his soul.I am vey proud to wear a poppy.

I always buy poppies for all of the family, in rememberance of my Grandfather who died, leaving my Grandmother with my mum ( less than a year old) and for Joe, a friend of my daughters, who died last year in Afghanistan. I will never forget standing on our driveway talking to him - with his car all packed up and ready to go... and he never came back.

When I wear my poppy, I always remember my father Dunkirk veteran and in the war from start to finish; my FIL rear gunner in a Wellington; my uncle who served in the Russian Conveys and 3 other uncles who served in the Forces and also Mr F's uncle who did not come home and is buried in Italy.
I also think of the families and friends of service men and women who are currently serving in the Forces as well as those whose loved ones will never come home.........
We must never forget their sacrifice.
RIP Foxie x.

I always buy a poppy and wear it. My dad lost three of his younger brothers in six months in 1944. Two were in the RAF and one a Merchant Seaman. They were 21, 23 and 24!! I have just been looking at their photographs today and they really were just young lads, not much older than my two grandsons!! June xx

I remember visiting the war graves in France just over 10 years ago...something my OH always wanted to do...our daughters were 12,8 & 3 years of age & I remember when they entered the cemetries they were so quiet & respectful as if they understood this was a place of rest...my youngest daughter who is 14 now wore her poppy with pride today when she went to meet up with all her friends...she said some of her friends wore poppies too...
