My OH and I were out for lunch today and were enjoying a lovely quiet meal. Four adults (in their 30's) came to sit at the next table and when their food arrived one of the men started to eat but was really eating without closing his mouth so it was a real smacking noise each mouthful he took. What surprised me is that none of his companions seemed to notice it yet my OH and I could hear it immediatly. We ended up leaving without having tea or coffee as I just couldn't stand it anymore. Now I realise little things can really wind me up at times but would this have upset you?? What eating habits do you not like?

Yes I agree, that would annoy me too. I couldn't eat with anyone who does that. I am very particular about eating, manners etc. Though that would be the worst to put me off my food. We were always knocking our son's wrists off the table when they were young, and always insisted they put knife and fork down on plate when pausing, and not sticking up in the air waving around (as many people do)!!

Hi Aec,
Yes, it most certainly would, I have noticed the way people talk with their mouths full to capacity also, with food exiting all over the place, and then they use their sleeves to wipe their mouths.
We were having a meal the other day, and there sat next to us, was a table of four, with the loudest voices imagineable, the whole restaurant could hear every single word of their conversation, we also decided not to bother with dessert, and left. You really wish you could tell them to speak a little quieter, but you can imagine what their response would be!!!!

I cannot bear bad table manners, the other day I was out for lunch and the man opposite was bent so far over his food that he was literally scooping it from the plate straight to his mouth, which meant he was shovelling so much in it was actually dribbling out of the side of his mouth uugghhh. Unfortunately I'm one of those people that no matter how much I'm repulsed I cannot look away.
Happily when I'm eating out with the lunch and/or supper club we are too busy gassing away to notice anyone else .

I hate to see inside other folks' mouths when they are eating and I don't like noise for noise's sake. But I try to be tolerant.
I know a young adult now who eats in a particular way that I find annoying and noisy but I try not to look or react because I don't know what problems he may or may not have.
My Dad had a stroke aged 47 and never spoke again. BUT he could make a lot of noise trying! And we made a lot of noise I expect trying to understand and suggest what he might be trying to tell us, then laughing when we got it right! It was not funny but we are glad to have had him for an extra 18.5 years like this. He loved to laugh and I always tried to make him do so.
Once, when an aunt and uncle were visiting we went out to lunch. The aunt had her own problems, and there was a bit of a mix-up when my dad and aunt decided to visit the toilet within minutes of each other. You can imagine the noise that provoked - from them and the rest of the restaurant guests!
It isn't always easy to detect whether somebody has a problem.
You are right. If you really can't stand it, leave the premises and let them continue to enjoy their food/drink.

Hello ...all of the above, plus people who put their tongue out when they are about to put a fork into their mouth, cant explain this very well but it is horrible !! ... almost as if they think they will drop a bit or are stuffing it in and cant get enough in their mouths quick enough !!

I agree with all of the above, but would also add those who don't know how to hold their cutlery properly. You know the ones - like Little Dragon's man using them as shovels, but also people who eat American style, just using their forks, or putting their knives in their mouths... eeeeeeuuuuuuuwwwwww!

People talking with a mouthful of food is just horrible, and it puts me off my food. And although I do this myself when manners demand, I hate the stuffy Englishness of something like eating pizza with a knife and fork, pick it up goddammit and enjoy the food as it was meant to be eaten..
As a child I was strictly monitored about how I placed a spoon in a bowl of soup as in the edge or the middle , and heaven help me if I got it wrong ...............now that concern with etiquette I find stupid and it bugs the hell out of me.
And the worst of the lot I DO NOT WANT MY MENU IN FRENCH, stupid arrogant and downright pretentious. I'm not French thank you very much.

Me too I agree with everything said above!! I also hate people who scrape their plates to get every last bit off . When our daughter used to bring home boyfriends I used to dread it if they didnt have good table manners !! I take my class of 6 and 7 yr olds into lunch everyday and you would not believe how many have no idea how to eat at a table, hold their cutlery or general table manners!! And this is at a private school!!

This is something I have a constant battle with at home. My children are starting to do things like their French pals do such as licking their spoon when they have a hot drink, knives and forks not placed side by side on the plate when they have finished and mopping up their sauce with bread!! We have come to a compromise-they have British rules nad French rules-when in the UK they eat British style and in France the eat French way.
Have just mentioned this to my OH who said, when I said about not mopping up the sauce in Britain, 'oh, shouldn't you!!'

Cant stand the slurping that goes on when some people eat soup, or when people chew with thier mouths open..and worse still when someone eats and talks with a full mouth. Think its really disgusting if people pick thier teeth at the end/during a meal.....eeeeuuuwww. Also when cutlery is just left where its been dropped with the last mouthful. Row

I agree with all the other comments and can I add another hate both adults and children who declaire that they do not like something on their plate befor they even try it . I have allways taught my children to try it for good manners and it realy makes me angry when the first words out of some ones mouth is I dont think I am going to like that . beausoliel at school my daughter was allways told to leave her hands in view and not to put them on her lap and it was quite acceplable to sit with your elbows on the table .

One of my sisters has a dreadful habit of picking at every one elses plate.... [WILL NOT BE DOING IT TO MINE ANYMORE] ....She is on a diet...doesn't order a meal but thinks its acceptable to 'pick at' every one elses plate....!! [One of my disagreements] I am afraid I am guilty of one of the misdemeanours listed here and that is the eating 'American style'.....ooooh actually just read another one.....I also LOVE to mope up with gorgeous fresh crusty bread especially if the meal has those wonderful delicious gravy/saucey tastes....

I too hate anyone chomping away with their mouth open. Used to hate people lighting up mid course too, thankfully they cant do that now. I too mop up any lovely gravy when I can.

I sometimes eat 'American' style because I have a tremor and find it difficult to eat with my fork in my left hand. So it isn't always how we do it but why!!! I do agree chomping and shovelling aren't good or eating with the mouth open. I don't want to see the chewed up mess before it is swallowed.

It is amazing the number of people who just cannot hold their knives and forks properly.
Overheard my Grandson telling his girlfriend that he wouldn't have dared not to have good table manners when he was young. Says he remembers Grandma telling his off a few times.
Eating off their knives. Why, when they have a fork
