I am just watching the news and they are talking about what is the greatest invention this century. They have not yet said what it is but I wondered what forum members thought it should be.
There are so many to talk about such as TV, computer, internet, space travel, planes, cars etc but mine is the invention of antibiotics/Penicillin How many lives has this saved over the years. Before we had these a simple cut could get infected and end up killing you.

I think I would agree with you Tuzanne - the development of anti-biotics has saved so many lives.

I would say for me the greatest invention of our time would be the MRI scanner without this the severity of my spinal injury would have been missed because I did not display the typical symptoms associated with my type of injury.
If I could choose two then I would go with tuzanne too penicillin.

The contraceptive pill, definitely. Without it, I'd probably have about 19 kids by now and costing the planet (and me) a fortune!

Sorry Mrs Smith but there are other methods. As for electricity I agree that is a good one and is a close second, and the MRI scan is a great invention but has not affected so many people as penicillin.

The Polio Vaccine.
A few years before I was born, there was a polio outbreak. I remeber seeing so many children with calipers. But there again, I didn't see thiose that died.
I remeber seeing the Danny Kaye film "Te 5 Pennies"nwher his daugher gets polio and is in an iron lung. It gave me nightmares for years.

snoopy, i think lycra is the worst invention ever !!! It grows with you, you never get that feeling that maybe you should put the biscuits back in the cupboard !!! at least when your clothes feel tight you know it's time to take action, with lycra, that feeling comes too late !

I think maybe the telephone - regardless of how technology has advanced, I still find it absolutely amazing that I can pick up a piece of plastic in my home and talk to someone hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away.

All medical advances which I would not say is 'invention' but 'advancement of science' ...... we have wonderful cures now for TB / various Cancer's / Penicillin / Leprosy / Hearing / Mobility / Scanners / Kidneys ... & all form of transplants / False limbs / MMR / Contraception / Sanitary conditions ... the list goes on.
I am so glad I am living now.... in fact we are all blessed that we have an nhs and emergency services.
