Mine is driving me mad. As soon as I go to bed it just won't stop. Have tried Covonia, sipping honey and lemon in warm water, sucking mints, sitting pretty upright etc. Any suggestions welcome after about 3 hours sleep last night!!

Hello aec23cat ... Time of year I think ... I have had a niggly one for over a month now.
I like Original Buttercup ... but it does not stop completely during the day, but certainly helps when I want to sleep .... that, and a stiff drink to knock me out.
Hope you feel better soon and are singing at the top of your lungs real soon !!!
Love Scarp. xx

Hi Scarp and thank you. Had actually decided tonight I would have a few glasses of wine to hopefully help me sleep so will just say it was your suggestion!!

I had this problem when I was in hospital a few years ago, and ever mindfull that I was disturbing the other patients, the more I tried to stop it the worse it became. Eventually along came a lovely Nurse who gave me a slightly higher than normal dosage of Benylin. I thought it would never work, doesn't at home, so wouldn't on the ward, I then realised that the Benylin was on the hotter side of warm. Down in one gulp and problem solved.
I now do it this way at home as well, but I also take up to bed at night a glass of cold water that I have kept in the fridge, to sip at if I need it. Works a treat.

Hi there
I used to get this a lot staying in university halls; eventually I realised the rooms were so overheated and dry; that was making things much worse
Do you heat your bedroom? Try turning the radiator off (you're still allowed a hot-water-bottle!) and putting a large bowl of boiling water near the bed to give off some steam. Breathe the moist air in as much as possible
You could buy a vaporiser but that costs money - this is the cheap Scottish equivalent!
I hope it eases off soon cos it's so exhausting

Olbas oil in a steam inhalation has helped me but mine has been a horrible chesty cough rather than a dry tickly cough.

No heat on Scottishmags and a window open also but will try the bowl of steaming water and might put some eucalyptus oil in it as well.

Try gargling with a couple of soluble paracetamol. Tastes horrible but it desensitises your throat.

I work on a childrens ward so caught loads of cold bugs in first couple of years before I started to get immune. I had a cough which seemed to go on for ever and the only way I could get any sleep to stop coughing was to use my OH's asthma inhaler. I know you are not supposed to use other people's perscriptions but this seemed to help open airways and let me get some sleep. I also used method of getting honey and lemon cough sweets to suck just after putting head on pillow.

Drambuie and ice.
The ice cools the throat, the honey soothes the throat, the whisky kills germs, it's thick so it clings to the throat, and it tastes wonderful

Hi aec13cat,
As already mentioned above, I found that the only thing that worked for me was Benylin Dry Coughs Original - you have to ask for it at the pharmacy part of a chemist shop. It is a cough suppressant and can make you drowsy, but when taken at night this is a definite benefit! Hope you feel better soon, it is so miserable when you can't sleep because of a cough.
