Surname Origins
      #500201 - 04/11/2009 00:13

We all know the the surname Fletcher means an arrow maker and Cooper means a barrel maker but I recently found out that my surname is, of all things, the medieval term for a soup stirrer. He was the little boy who sat by the fireplace, in the heat of the fire, stirring broth in a cauldron. If you want to have a guess as to what it is, send me a PM!!! All those on my Christmas card list are exempt!!!

Anybody else know the meaning of their surname?

No, I have tried but to no avail. I think mine is scottish origin, but unfortunately have come to a dead end. I have been doing my family tree but still no openings as to where my surname comes from.

Scottish in origin (Galloway region). The first syllable apparently was common usage in medieval times for cat. I'd have much preferred it to be dog!

Used to be used for a first name an meant laughing.

My grandma was a Ball, which not surprisingly means a short round person. Her father was originally Balls but dropped the s when he moved north in the 1880's. Can't say I blame him.

Mine is scottish but my maiden name is french and I was so upset as a little girl to think that when I married that would be the end of our family name as I have no cousins on that side of the family and no brothers.
