memories of toiletries etc....
      #500039 - 03/11/2009 20:41

...that our Mums used to use. (or that we used as teenagers)

Following on from Toffeekits post about her mum's face cream (on your looks)

What products do you remember from the past?.For me, it is smells which remind me , in particular of my Mum or of my youth. My mum had bottles of Tweed, Blue Grass and then later on Body Shop white musk.

The Body Shops Vanilla oil reminds me of a passionate relationship I had in my twenties (Icant resist sniffing it when I go into the shop...the memories come flooding back!)

My mum used to use Ponds Vanishing Cream , which as a child I thought was an amusing name (thoughts of the invisible man were conjoured up!), although when I used it myself I realised what a great product it was..it did indeed vanish into the skin!!

Apple Blossom perfume. Or any of the Avon ones - Topaz, Occur. Mum used those. And Freesia - how I hated that one!

Gran was fond of Bronnley Fern talcum Powder.

My first grown up perfume was Unforgettable, in a roll-on bottle, when I was 14.

Patchouli oil, my hippy phase.

Now as for aftershaves...

..wispa

Hi Blossom - That brought back memories as the last perfume my mum wore was Body Shop White Musk. My Gran wore Blue Grass but I don't like the smell of it

As a teenager, I was obsessed with Moschino Cheap and Chiq! Maybe it's cause I thought I was.

My mum has never been much of a 'smellies' person up until recently so nothing strikes a chord there. Remember her always having a bottle of Chanel No 5 but I couldn't tell you what it smelt like!!

I was seeing a guy once, many years ago who smelt absolutely delicious...over the years on a rare occasion I have caught a whiff of it and it's always thrown me back to those desirable times...the good news is the dude is kind of back (yay!!) and he still smells absolutely bloody delicious!!!

My Mum used to wear Je Reviens by Worth. Perfume bottle collectors can still buy the empty bottles on eBay but you can't buy the perfume any more.

Rive Gauche (sp?) bought on a trip to Athens in my rebelious 'I'm buying a one way ticket and you can't stop me phase', Can't stand the smell of it but had the best summer!!!!

As a youngster I had really long hair and washing night was a nightmare until my mum treated me to a tube of Estolan hair conditioner. What a miracle it was, no tangles and tears from then on. I remember feeling so special that mum had bought it for me.

I remember wearing Avon Topaz too, but can't remember the smell.
Je Reviens was terrible on me and a boyfriend once bought me a huge bottle of it.
My friend's mum wore Madame Rochas, and I remember borrowing it.
When I got married I wore Memoire Cherie by Elizabeth Arden.
I remember something called Kiku in a yellow bottle.
Oh, and loved Tramp by Lentheric.......my hairdresser couldn't belive it when I told her that there was one called Tramp! never thought it was odd then.

My favourite in my teens was Aqua Manda.

My mum's fav was Estee Lauder Youth Dew - always reminds me of her when I smell it. I remember her having Avon Topaz on her dressing table too. It had a gem on the lid and I thought it looked really beautiful

My mum's scent was Coty L'Aimant- reminds me of the dentist as they always put perfume in the gas to disguise the smell!

My Grandma always wore Californian Poppy. I thought it was so sophisticated. I found a small sample sized bottle of it in a little chemist shop recently and bought it. Somehow the top came off in my handbag and spilled - the handbag still smells lovely after many months....
I loved Helena Rubenstein's Heaven Scent - particularly the talc with the powder puff. I would love to get some of that again...any ideas?

My mum had California Poppy and L'Aiment but she kept them for "good" unlike me as I wouldnt step out without my perfume or lippie. My older sister had a bottle of Tweed that an aunt gave her and I hated it, remember being a horrible little sister and telling her no boy would ask her out wearing it as she smelt like an old lady. I also told her that noone would love her as her nose was like a strawberry. ( think she had a few blackheads at the time) I hang my head in shame. But she did do some horrible things to me like put my teddy in the bin so I was probably just geting my own back after one of hre incidents.

My mum worked in a department store and always brought back perfume samples. I loved Yardley Sea Jade.

Do any of you remember the Aqua Manda range - lovely dark brown bottles with orange labels - very 1970s. The smell was of oranges. I remember wearing it when I went out on Saturday nights dancing - and so did most of the other girls!

I used to Love "Hartnell's In Love", and "Dioressence", OH went to the US not long after we had married, and he came back with a huge bottle of perfume, that I had never heard of before, it was called "Black Sahara, I am not kidding, it was lovely, but never seen or heard of it again ha ha.
