can anyone advise the best way to get to Edinburgh from Leeds? We were up in Scotland over half term but ran out of time to visit. I priced up flights but i could go abroad for the cost of that! Was wondering about the train but not sure if its better than driving

If going by train, then take a local train from Leeds to York and pick up the East Coast mainline at York, from there its straight up to Edinburgh with a lovely view.

Edinburgh is definitely NOT car friendly. With all the tram works going on Princes Street the surrounding area is a no go area. I would suggest taking the train as even getting from the airport by bus is a bit of a nightmare just now. Both our children live in Edinburgh, the town of my birth, and we are avoiding visiting at the moment. Took us almost an hour to cover a few miles last Wednesday night at rush hour.

Hi, the only way that I have been is via train - hassle free and you can get some really good deals - last time it cost me about £30 return - travelled from York -

Hi Amanda. I live 5 mins walk from Princes Street and would definately not come by car. The joy of this city is the walking.
I did drive up from Leeds to Edinburgh last year but it's a drag unless you have loads of time. You can pick up East Coast mainline trains at York every few hours. Much easier so let the train take the strain. Enjoy our beautiful city.

p.s. I was a student at Leeds University in the late 60s. Loved it. Lived in Headingly near the cricket then in Far Headingly. The night life was great especially The InTime disco where a girl danced in a cage and Jimmy Saville was a regular customer. Happy days!

Hi Amanda. I certainly remember one club in the Merrion Centre, don't remember whether it was the InTime. I do remember the first bedsit I had in Kirkstall Road where the landlady showed me the bathroom and said 'It's a nice big bathroom so when one of the boys is shaving you can have a wash at the same time', The boys were lorry drivers and I was a young innocent away from home for the first time. Lovely friendly folk in Yorkshire. I've loved Yorkshire, especially North Yorkshire, ever since.
Yes, Edinburgh is a bit of a mess right now but think how spectacular the tram ride with the castle as backdrop will be once it's up and running.
