Turmuric Capsules
      #498741 - 02/11/2009 11:43

Does anyone take these?

I've heard they are good for people with anti-inflammatory diseases.

My cupboard is already groaning under the weight of supplements, but hey, always room for more!

Oh Chilla, I wish I'd consulted you before I bought my green-lipped mussel extract capsules, rose hip extract capsules and Seven Seas Omega 3/Glucosamine tablets - I'd be far healthier in the purse at least!

However, the author did advise taking his own supplements - do you take any? I do worry that the food we eat today is totally devoid of vitamins and minerals because of all the travelling it's done and all the pesticides it's been sprayed with. The web and all it's info has left me more confused than ever!

Yes, we do now have Flint, a 10-yr old yellow lab. He's fab, absolutely wonderful. You'd never guess he was 10, his guide dog owner did a great job in looking after him - let's hope we can live up to those standards!

Slack-bladdered-Sean heads off to Forfar for his advanced training on Thursday. Can you believe it!

Sorry only skimmed the first bit. I seem to remember reading that the compounds in turmeric would have to be eaten in such vast quantities that it would be impossible to actually consume enough.

Here's another quote:

And remember I always do. A while back Van Straten was in the Express, saying that “research studies” had shown that turmeric was “highly protective against many forms of cancer, especially of the prostate” (Badscience.net/?p=65). There are, for turmeric and prostate cancer, a few speculative lab studies on cells, in dishes, cut out of rats, growing or not growing, under microscopes, on lab benches. That is not evidence to say that turmeric is “highly protective against cancer” for undissected living people in the real world.

No I don't take anything. i know thre's a lot out there about how much vitamin and mineral depletion there is, but like you say there's a lot of information and most of it isn't backed by proper trials, so I just ignore it. Here's another bit:

What is the evidence for commonly available foods being deficient in vitamins, minerals and other micro-nutrients?

I’ve heard that, possibly due to modern farming techniques, vegetables contain less vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients than they did in the first half of the 20th century. Is there any evidence for this?

It’s a complicated answer – however, on balance, we eat a greater range of foods and less spoiled than previous times in history so it may well be argued that our range of nutritional choices is higher quality and more accessible. I strongly recommend Fogel’s The Escape from Hunger and Premature Death, 1700-2100: Europe, America, and the Third World.

Quackometer has an overview of the claims relating to mineral-depleted food.

We should remember, of course, that in previous times, ‘nutritionists’ decried the habit of adding any form of fertiliser to soil – advocating that only crops from ‘virgin soil’ should be eaten.

Oh bless you, Ihope he settled down quickly. It must be really emotional for someone to part with their guide dog...I'm not sure I could in that situation. Give Flint a pat from me and several woofs from my pack

Thanks for your help Chilla, spose I'm just looking for a miracle supplement that will get this arthitis under control before giving in to Dmards.

Ah well, at least Flint is taking me out for plenty of exercise these days!

I'll refer back to this thread every time I see a shiney new box of herbal supplements on Boots shelves calling my name and telling me I can get one free if I buy 2!

Sorry to hear your arthritis is bad. One of my friends suffers badly with it and the only that helps slightly is not to drink too much....so far she seems to still enjoy her wine, well there are limits!
