Get fat with W & H
      #486122 - 14/10/2009 17:00

The main veggie recipe in November's issue has 923 calories per portion! Yes, 923 calories! 60g fat (36g saturated) and 40g carbohydrate.
For four people, it uses nearly 2lbs cheese!

Nigel Slater then gives us two veggie recipes with no nutritional values although I suspect the 400ml double cream isn't going to be low in calories!

Then there's "chocolate heaven" where the portions are around 400 calories, rising to 644 for the roulade with Bayleys cream.

Are W & H staff reading the forum? Do they know how many of us are exercising like mad and watching our calorie intake? It would take a heck of a lot of steps to burn off even half a slice of cake. So why print this? Surely no-one in their right mind is going to make a four cheese gratin and use up practically all their daily allowance in one go?
I was going to take out a subscription but this has put me right off.

They do diet low-clorie stuff as well. You don't have to eat it, there's a choice!

I looked at the recipes and thought they'd be just right for a special occasion and could probably be adapted to be lighter (or the gratin could be served in smaller portions with a large salad). It's nice to be reminded that you can eat this sort of food occasionally. A few years ago magazines only ever seemed to have low calorie recipes so it's healthy to see that they're no longer saying that starving yourself to be model thin is the only option.

I know what you're saying but 23 gms saturated fat? And the gratin is all pasta and cheese with NO vegetables. To me, it's just plain unhealthy. I'm not looking for low calorie particularly: I love cheese but limit my intake. Just some healthy veg options, esp in these credit crunch days, would be more appropriate in a magazine that is allegedly promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Come on give W & H a break, isn't it wonderful to look at these recipes and drool - sometimes we need to just enjoy all the recipes on offer. We must also think about all the people (and there are some) that do not have to watch their weight (lucky ladies). We know what is healthy and sometimes we adapt the recipes.
Now I will go and prepare my salad for lunch (only joking).
Sandra
