Morning roly - like you I tried to read this book. Its not often I give up but I just found this one ...well...boring! I was disappointed as it got good reviews. I wasn't impressed.

Hi Roly and Bev
This wasn't my usual sort of book but while I was working in the local bookshop, one of the young guys there was reading it obsessively - any spare minute he had - so I thought i'd try it and I enjoyed it much more than I expected.
I really enjoy Victorian fiction and I liked the atmosphere the author conjured up - I found it quite intriguing

I wonder if I wasn't "in the mood" for the book. I have held on to it and will try again. Reading The Cellist of Sarajevo now and really enjoying it.

My son loved this book and said I would too but I have really struggled with it! It is still on my bedside table and I've read another 4 books since I gave up on it. I'm about half way I think - but lifes too short and there are so many good books to read!!

Hi Roly I read and enjoyed the book. I wouldn't say it was my favourite but I enjoyed it. I quite like (social) history and this is a true account of a murder within a well-to-do family and I liked the whole 'whodunnit' thing. The murder of the child was horrific and it occurred in the early days of using detectives to solve such cases. I liked that parallel of the murder story but also the narration of the detective work and how it evolved. However, if you cannot get into it, don't torture yourself - I couldn't read White Teeth or Captain Correlli's Mandolin !!

Generally, I love "social history" books, which was why I chose it. I just can't get into the characters. I couldn't do White Teeth and have tried 3 times to read Captain Correlli.
Might give it another try tonight

Hi again - sorry, haven't been online for a few days. I'm glad to hear someone else couldn't read WT & CCM !! I thought I was some kind of philistine because I 'couldn't get them'. I guess Roly there are some books we are not going to read and enjoy and the only thing to do is move on. Happy reading

I listened to this as an audiobook ( an abridged version, I think ) and really enjoyed it. I loved Captain Correlli's Mandolin but haven't tried White Teeth. Has anybody read Andrea Levy's 'Small Island' which is being made into a TV series ?
