The Cellist of Sarajevo
      #490731 - 21/10/2009 18:54

I have just recently finished this book and am so glad I read it. You can't say you enjoyed a book like this as it was harrowing at times. I learnt a lot from this novel. It gave an insight into what life must have been like when living in such an awful situation. Even getting water was a life threatening task. I found the end shocking.

Ginnie me too- I thought it was an amazing book and it was harrowing but glad I read it. It goes to show how the everyday things in life become so dangerous in a war zone.

I read this on holiday and it was miles away from a typical beach read .. really shocking to realise the conditions people were struggling with so close to home and so recently too. I thought it was even more effective for not portraying all the characters as heroic; the man fetching water for his family under threat from snipers was shown as just as terrified as we'd be - also in the way he resented his selfish old neighbour .. very convincing

This sounds really interesting, I'm always on the lookout for book reviews as positive as this. I'm also a big fan of historical novels, and this sounds like a great read. Thanks very much for all the opinions.

Hi Ladies,
Was really interested in your review of this book. I have'nt read it but I gave it to my friend as part of her birthday last night. Will wait with baited breath to hear her take on it, but beginning to wonder if it was suitable for part of a birthday gift.
Ooops.

Hi Storky
Don't worry. I would have been really pleased if someone had given it to me as a gift.
Hosta and Scottish Mags, so glad you both got as much out of the book as I did . Both of your opinions mirror mine.

Hi Ginnie,
Thanks for your message. Feel a bit relieved now. Maybe I will read it myself sometime, reading all your opinions it sounds a fascinating book.

Hi
just finished reading this ...very good book indeed. All the more topical as the Hague has just started it war crimes tribunal. Without giving too much away a real shock at the end.
