Job contract problem - can anyone help?
      #416198 - 03/07/2009 19:03

In November 2008 I took a fixed term contract for 6 months to cover a sabbatical. At the 2 interviews for the job, I was told there was every intention of making the position permanent. In March I was then told that the company could not offer me a permanent contract but wanted me to stay and offered me a further 6 month contract. I accepted the offer (which I understand does in fact mean I had a contract for a further 6 months). I had nothing in writing and to confirm the offer I asked about it a few weeks later and was told the offer was still there - I reaffirmed my acceptance. Then in April I was told that the company was giving me 2 months notice to finish at the end of June!

I have gone through the grievance procedure and appeal - the company denies the offer of a 6 month contract and are not prepared to discuss the matter further. Is there any action I can take?

Any advice really appreciated - I'm so frustrated about this!

I would advise going along to the Citizens Advice Bureau. They were brilliant when Mr F had a problem at work.

Good luck

Hi there and welcome

You need to speak to ACAS. If you look in your phone book or online you should get their number. They are excellent at answering employment queries.

I have a friend who has an employment law consultancy and they offer free advice. Not sure where you are but you can email or phone them. they're called The Howarth Partnership, based in Cleckheaton, you'll find them on google. There must be a similar organisation near to you. They've also just set up a company dealing specifically with unfair dismissal claims so it might be worth contacting them, we went to see them this week as my son was dismissed from his job in april but unforunately they didnt feel we'd have a case for unfair dismissal which we thought would be the case, but at least they confirmed what we thought. good luck x
