I go to get one?
I will be celebrating my 50th birthday in september and would really like a make-over..you know clothes/make-up etc... I have just had my hair re-styled and it looks very sexy/girly even if I say so myself. Anybody out there who can give me ideas on how I would go about having a make-over...I live in a male dominant house..i.e. OH and son..and my sister lives too far away to ask..Help!!!

You could book an appointment with a personal shopper at one of the big department stores. It's usually free and you don't have to buy what they suggest if you don't like it.
While you are in the store have a look at the beauty counters. I've recently had my make up done by a make up artist on the Clarins counter at John Lewis (apparently they send make up artists round the country to help out at the counters and boost sales), and I often find the Benefit girls helpful. Again, it might help if you make an appointment. Check them out until you find one that's willing to do it for free, or who will charge but refund the charge if you buy something. Good luck. Sella.

I had a session with 'Colour me beautiful' paid for by my kids for a significant birthday. That was a revelation in terms of colours and styles which might suit. I know there are a lot of personal shooping services indept stores, but there is one at Monsoon which I have used.My daughter in law had Monsoon vouchers from everyone for her 30th and then had the personal shopping which she loved..

You can get a makeup lesson at a MAC counter in any store, or in a MAC shop. They cost £25, but this is redeemable against purchases, and you can buy an eyeshadow and lipstick for that, so you will almost certainly spend it. All the MAC people are professional makeup artists; you will not be getting a school leaver!
If you are in London, the Benefit shop in St Christopher's Place does makeovers, and any Benefit counter will do you a mini-makeover for free.
Enjoy your birthday!

Jessie, I don't think you need a personal shopper - just a good mate who will tell you the truth! I personally think Trinny and Susannah knew how to dress women - Gok and Mylene go for the mutton look too often. I favour Monsoon and a shop called Kew. You need to feel comfortable in your own choices not someone elses. Hair, make up etc can all be done at different establishments not necessarily all at once

You can find makeup counters in most department stores, e.g. Debenhams, House of Fraser, etc.
You can also try the Mac and Benefit websites and see where your nearest store is, and whether you can book a makeover directly; some stores will do it for you on the spot, but others you have to book.
Aveda may also be worth a try.
Happy 50th!

Louisa, Where are you based? I have worked as a stylist on different shoots and would be happy to help you. I recently went shopping with my 74 year old mother in-law and she said it was the best day ever. Would be happy to meet in London, if this is convenient for you, at no charge. Let me know.

If you have a John Lewis or Debenhams near you, book a appointment with the stylist and the make-up counter.
You willbe amazed the different colours that a stylist suggest. Colours you might have completely shied away from.
Good luck. These people shouldn't charge anything as far as I know.
