Hello all - this is my first post on this particular forum, so please be kind!
I have very thick curly hair like a birds' nest, which is a horrible mess at the moment because I had a shoulder injury and it hurt too much to brush it.
Next weekend I am becoming Godmother to my friend's baby daughter and I am leading the ceremony. I have failed to lose weight and look like a lump, so I feel the least I can do is try to tidy my hair.
I don't want to get straighteners because I've been told they ruin your hair, but has anyone tried blow-drying their hair straight. In which case, do you have any tips for me? Please? I'm an absolute novice at this sort of thing, so advice would be great.

My friend has similar hair and had it blow-dried straight professionally at a hairdresser's for going to a ball .. it looked fantastic and totally changed her look.
A good pair of straighteners, like ghd's, will cost the best part of £100 and you may never use them again .. so I would definitely go for the salon option. If you can afford it, even have a trial run before the big day..
And I wouldn't give your weight a second thought .. babies love cuddly people!

Thanks Mags, that would certainly seem to be the sensible option.
Unfortunately I have a terrible phobia about anyone touching my hair, and would rather go to the dentist than the hairdresser. Literally.
We really must have that coffee some time.

Hi
I have the same affliction! My husband tells me he loves my curly hair, but in the same breath calls me "pubic hair head" - very attractive. This hot, humid weather is torture.
I have spent years trying every product and technique on the market, with varying results, but nothing works at the moment.
The best solution I have come up with so far is to use Charles Worthington Results shampoo and conditioner - the orange one for moisture. I then use L'Oreal Tec styling gel before I blow dry. Use a big brush with open vents - mine is a Babyliss brush. Divide your hair into sections and use a clip to separate. Start with the sections underneath. Wind the hair over the brush and point the hairdryer down the hairshaft to smooth the cuticles. Always finish each section with a cool blast before moving on to the next bit. When it is all done, smooth over some Frizz-Ease serum, and give a spray with Frizz-Ease hairspray. I do have straighteners, and I dont find that they damage my hair anymore than using a hairdryer everyday. As long as you use a product to protect the hair, it should be fine. I always finish my blowdry with a quick straightening - only going over each section once.

Instead of trying to get it dead straight which isn't all that easy, you could wash your hair & set it on very big rollers to give big,smooth, barrel curls instead of frizz. This works really well.
Especially effective if you put in some leave in conditioner before drying & use a bit of serum when it's dried. Don't take out the rollers until you're sure the hair is properly dry.

Thanks folks - that all gives me plenty to try. I'll be staying in a nice hotel the night before the ceremony, so I'll be able to experiment quietly in the morning. Well, my male friend will be around, but I'm sure he'll watch telly; it's all he does when he's not on the internet.
And if I look like a bird's nest at the end of it all, i'll just shove it in a plait!
I'll give you some feedback when it's all over, but thank you so much for the advice.

I would take the bull by the horn and try to have it done at the hairdrssers (sorry if you have a real phobia and I have offended you).A professional bow dry will last much longer than doing it your self and your hairdresser will be able to cut it in a style that will stay in.

I do have a real phobia blossom, but you haven't offended me at all. I only need it to last a day; I stick it in a bun the rest of the time so as not to catch nits from any kids I'm working with.

A good pair of straighners are ok to use on your hair, but I would go tp the hairdresser and have it done a couple of times before buying a pair. You should buy GHD. I dont as they are expensive.
My hair is dead straight. I wish it was wavy.

So - tried to make nice waves and ended up with fuzz ball as per usual. Oh well, the ex says it's what gives me character, but just for once I wouldn't mind sleek locks like everyone else.

GHD's are the best. We have at least 2 pairs. When I dropped mine and they failed to work I sent them off to be repaired here

I noticed that they pay you for your old GHD's and that they sell reconditioned GHD's. Worth a look if you don't want to shell out for a brand new pair.
