Anyone been to Marrakech?
      #413873 - 27/06/2009 16:26

I'm going to Marrakech on a short break and wondered if anyone had been. Is the shopping good (will I need lots of money!) and where are the places of interest? Any tips and info will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sheila welcome to the forum - post a 'Hi I'm New' notice on Your Lives and everyone will welcome you, this is a very friendly forum.
I went to Marrakech some years ago for a day trip while on holiday in Morocco and absolutey loved it - I would like to go back for a sort break at some time as there is so much to do and see. There was plenty to spend your money on then and I would imagine that there is even more now. We were advised to have an official guide take us round the kasbah to ensure that we were not cheated and I imagine that this advice would still be true. Don't forget to haggle the price down for anything you buy and you should get some lovely bargains. Don't forget to spend an evening in the Djema el Fna Square where there is a lot of entertainment including snake charmers (eugh).

We went to Marrakesh for Christmas a few years ago. There are palaces and Royal tombs to visit. We didnt have a guide for the kasbah you just have to haggle.I bought a lovely handbag for about £28. If you go to a Muslim restaurant they won't serve wine. There is a good French restaurant really reasonable Will post the name if can remember it.Everything is in walking distance of the Square. If you stay long enough its worth hiring a car to visit the Atlas mountains and to go along the coast and visit the potteries at Saffi and the resort Oualadia.the scenery is lovely and all the donkey carts make you go back in time.

Hi,
We went to Marrakech in March 09. We had a wonderful time but it is positively biblical! We just wandered around the souks, had a drink on the big square and read books on the Riad roof terrace! It was lovely. Our Riad was fabulous - El Mansour - if you want to have a look on Trip Advisor. Everyone is very friendly but beware anyone who offers help, directions etc as they all want money. After you get over the fact that everyone wants something from you - it is easier.
Do not stop to look at a map or they will pounce!

Thanks all for responding, the information you have all given will be useful.
My first question on the forum, I've been getting the magazine for years but never thought of the forum, I can see I'm going to like this and be spending far too much time on the computer!
