Hi Jo,
I would definately recommend Limone I have had wonderful holidays there! On my last holiday there I stayed in the Hotel Astor it is set in the hillside and overlooks the lake, the view is stunning. It was fantastic, clean, air conditioned, excellent food and we had a room overlooking the lake with an uninterrupted view. The Hotel is five minutes walk away from the town, down a lovely pathway. I'm sure you will have a wonderful holiday no matter which town you choose to stay in. Lake Garda is just the perfect holiday destination in my opinion.

How funny, we came back from Lake Garda last week. Depending on what you're looking for, we stayed in a place called Bardolina and loved it. You can walk into Garda, about a 40 minute stroll, although we thought it a bit too busy and noisy. You can catch the boats to various places, or a bus. Bardolina is very clean, and lots of bars and restaurants and little shops, but no night clubs, which was fine by us.
What sort of place are you looking for - and is it a couple, family?

Wow, so lovely to get replies, I'm new to the site so wasn't sure what to expect. Thank you.
We are a couple, really looking for walking and history - some siteseeing. I like wandering small towns to soak up the culture, stop have a coffee - watch the world go by in another language -so to speak. Not looking for nightlife other than restuarants.
thanks Jo

Well Bardolina could be the place for you Jo. We went as a couple too, and wanted the same things as you. While we were there we went to Simonie (sp!) where we went up a fortress but then got rained on so didn't see much of the town, only the cafes! The next day we got a bus to Monchesnie, which is a really lovely place. We caught a cable car to the top of Mont Baldo, which was fabulous. Arrived to clouds and it was freezing, then the sun came out and it was glorious. Had lunch in a lovely restaurant there, like a Swiss chalet, with the sun shining on us. We wanted to catch a bus to Verona and Venice but didn't have time and wanted to enjoy the warm weather. There is so much to go and see but we just ran out of time. We are actually thinking about going again to see the things we missed this time.

Hi JO, I agree with all bluebella says. We had fantastic holiday to Bardolino and walked in both directions alternate days/evenings. Also hired bikes but the paths were too busy with pedestrians so only did that once. It is lovely in the evening in Bardolino as they have a programme of free entertainment in the church/ square and grassy area ranging from pop to classical music. WE went on day trips to Florence and Milan and round the lake. Florence was a long way but worth seeing. Also went to Verona and Venice. As you can tell we are not sunworshippers but like to get out and see the area.. The ferries are really frequent and easy to use. We only spent a few hours in Limone so cant tell you much about it. You will have a fantastic time. As Bluebella says though go prepared for rain. We were there in early July and had quite a few wet afternoons but it was dramatic and over quickly. We felt the North of the lake wasn't as warm as the south bbut again might just have been the day we were there.

Hi Jo. We went to Desanzano. It's one of the largest towns on the lake and is nowhere near as touristy as some of the others, but is quite cosmopolitan.
Sirmione, whilst quite pretty, is a teeming mass of tourists. As is Limone in my opinion. I'm so sorry to disagree with those who liked it and of course it is just a personal view.
Malcesine is nice if you like watersports. The further north you go the smaller more touristy the towns.
Having said that, I love Lake Garda. It is such a personal thing isn't it? I'm just not keen on small places that are overrun with tourists.
Wherever you go the links are good and there are boats to all of the towns anyway.

Limone is lovely, but quite pricey compared to Malcesine and Riva.
Riva always seems to be a few degrees colder than everywhere else. It's lovely, but not my favourite.
Malcesine is very nice.
Bardolino is fantastic.
I love Lake Garda, and love using the boats the way we use buses -except the service is better.
I would try and stay half way down - then you can take a boat to either end of the lake.

We stayed in Sirmione but personally I found it a bit too big. We took a day trip to Venice by train from Desanzano - very easy journey. Salo was one of our favourite places, as well as Malcesine. We also went into Verona and saw an open air performance of Carmen. Beware you will certainly need something to sit on those stone seats can be red hot in the summer.
Lake Garda is one of the loveliest places i've visited

Hi My 3rd daughter got married in Gardone Riviera three years ago in September it was beautiful and the weather was lovely they stayed and had the receptions at the Grand Hotel which is super, this is right next to the lake also it the hotel featured in a lot of ads for Lake Garda would recommend. Boat Terminus is very near, pretty cafes etc. Have been to Salo, very nice, Malcesine and Sirmione and been across to Isola di Garda which is well worth the trip.

Hi there. I agree with everyone that Lake Garda really is a wonderful place. I stayed in Riva one year, but much prefer Limone - okay, it might be a little busy, but it is just SO pretty and lovely to have the little shops to browse around after the evening meal. Malcesine is also lovely. Very relaxing just going up and down the lake on the boats and calling in at all the different places. I can guarantee you'll have a lovely time!

Malcesine is great and if you are a walker has the benefit of Mount Baldo which you can to up in a lift and plenty of walks and cycle tracks up the top (skiing in the winter) I had a great holiday the and have the name of a relatively cheap apartment which was lovely and had magnificent views (from your bed) across the lake. let me know if you are interested and will give you details.

We loved Limone - so pretty. You can easily get boats to the other places, and they are all lovely, but we were so pleased that we had chosen Limone to stay in. If we went again though I would go to a different hotel. Can't remember the name of the hotel though, but we had half board, and the food was so awful that most nights we ate out, so more expensive than we had hoped.
