I am looking to book a villa holiday for next year for 4 couples (all adults) and have seen one in Elounda, Crete. It's 18 years since I was last there and wanted to know if it's still as lovely as it was back then. Any hints, tips or advice would be welcomed - thanks

HI Bizi We went probably a bit more recently but not much, Ithink there are more luxury hotels there now but its probably still lovely. We enjoyed sun bathing on the rocks, wishwe were going to Greece.

Thanks Cia for your reply.
If I remember rightly the old t.v. drama series 'Locust Eaters' was filmed at Elounda many moons ago, I bet you are too young to remember! I have a lot of homework to do on the area as I am being made 'leader' of our holiday gang and they are looking to me to choose not only a suitable villa which has to have 4 double bedrooms and a pool but also a lovely area close to the shops, restaurants and beach. Hopefully we won't have to rely on hiring cars..........:)

I went to Crete two years ago, we had a villa in hills outside Ag Nic. We all thought Elounda was lovely and went there several times in the evening.
Cia is right there are quite a few luxury hotels there now but it seems to have retained a nice "feel" about the place.

Hello
I have just came back from there, 2 weeks ago. The weather was fabulous, never a cloud in the sky, the sun was very hot and the days long, and the sea was clear blue, and the food was great. The town is small but perfect for dining and taking in the atmosphere, and there is another town 10 minutes taxi ride away if you prefer to shop and party, and for the markets.
I would go back tomorrow, the shops are stocked well with allot of uk products and the poeple are very nice, they have been affected very much by the economic downturn and so the place is very quiet, and they welcome you with open arms.
The prices for drinks in the town are very cheap, the hotels are dearer. out of many other the islands Elounda doesnt seem to have any young crowds of people, just families and couples.
The taxi people are a bit erratic, the hiring of cars may be a bit scary!! i never did that, as it was only a 7 day holiday i was happy to just relax and take in the sunshine and cocktails!!

Hi Elf, How lovely of you to take time to reply. I am now really looking forward to sorting out the holiday after all. I have to admit I was a bit daunted being made the 'chosen one' to do all ther research etc as I have a bunch of very fussy pals! Mind you, I am fussy myself. Elounda sounds lovely - There is a villa named Anemos Avra which I am seriously looking into now having read your posts. It's through Owners Direct - so wish me luck. Thanks again all who contributed to this post!

Hi Bizibee
My pleasure, i was happy to be able to answer something i knew a little about!! Have a lovely holiday whatever you choose, I just sent you the link of the hotel group i stayed in, seemed this one was well known as the luxury hotels of elounda but bare in mind Elounda is quite small and quaint, and there are many many other places to stay with the same lovely views.

We normally choose the south coast as it's much quieter and good for walking - we've stayed near Plakias and near Chora Sfakion.
