Hi Paula

I think that's a really good idea.

Have you come across a great website called "librarything" which does exactly that? You put in a list of your own favourite books, giving them a score out of 5, and putting them in a category eg "Victorian, crime" or"19th century, India" .. and it matches you up with people who like the same books, and lets you look at their lists of favourite books, so you can find lots of new ideas for what to read. I'm not explaining this very well, but it's worth just googling and having a look. And it's free!

I like Sarah Waters, and ended up being led to Michael Collins' books which I've bought for reading on holiday. I also read loads of novels set on the Indian sub-continent, and I've come across some new authors there too.

Here's a suggestion for people who like crime fiction:

If you like Henning Mankell's books (Wallander) , you'll like " The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson.

Hi Scottishmags
Thanks for the info on librarything website. I had a quick tour round their site this morning and have now signed up.

I have a great stack of books to read but some of them are just books people bring in at work and leave for anyone that wants them. I can never resist bringing them home if nobody else wants them but now feel I have so many that it's getting me down, if that makes sense as I haven't got time to read a lot at the moment. So I've decided they're all going to the charity shop and I'm going to start again. Only this time look for recommendations or use this new website to look up and see what else people are reading. So often in the past I have wasted time on a novel trying to get into it.
Billie

Hi billie

It's not great feeling snowed under, is it?

What sort of books do you like to read?

You should find me on the librarything website if you look, tho I haven't been active for a while

Hi Mags
I tend to like novels set in the 1800's ie. Andrew Taylors "The American Boy" and " Bleading Heart Square"I thought these books had great atmosphere and found myself engrossed all the way through both of them. They were full of characters and I could instantly picture myself in the rooms with them (as a fly on the wall so to speak). Good plots and I didn't guess the endings! Have you read either of these books?
Having said all that I love books and my taste does vary according to what mood I'm in and also if I've read some thing deep I usually follow it with a light read.
Are you under the same name on librarything? I've only uploaded 2 books up to now and will probably dip in and out of the website until I get familiar with it. Do you use it for finding book recommendations or do you just use it as way of recording what your favourite books are? Billie

Hi billie, sorry, have just seen your post and realised I didn't answer..

I use librarything to get ideas of what I'd enjoy reading. It takes a bit of time initially, as you have to upload your own favourite books .. I think I've done about a hundred .. but it's quite easy.. then they link you to people who share the greatest number of books with you, and you can look at their libraries to see what else they read. Also, you label your own books with any "tag" you want .. "crime", "Victorian", "India" .. and you can link to other books on the same theme. Some people also write reviews but i haven't found the time to do that

Really recommend this site to anyone who likes new ideas on what to read.. it's free too!
