I have always wanted to visit the Portmeirion Village in North Walles. I have finally persuaded my OH to take a few days there at the end of the month. I have booked a room at Castell Deudraeth, & was wondering if anyone else has been there recently & what they thought of it. What were the best points of it, and was it very crowded? I'm afraid that I may be disappointed, a nd find that it is perhaps an expensive "theme park"

I don't think you'll find that it's a theme park. It's a while since I was there so it might have changed but it's well worth seeing. How busy it is will probably depend on the weather, but when we went it wasn't crowded. The coastline on the Lleyn peninsula is lovely and some of the towns are quaint, but none are as pretty as Portmeirion. The Welsh language is widely spoken in the area.

I visited a couple of years ago, like you had always wanted to visit because I used to love The Prisoner!!! It was smaller than I thought it was going to be but it is very surreal, well worth a visit. Enjoy

Lovely part of the UK, I really enjoyed my visit, just went for the day, and loved the hotel on the beach, where we had afternoon tea, and the shop selling all the Portmeirion crockery was a delight, well worth a visit.

Hi Rosalie.
How wonderful that you have booked a stay in Castle Deudraeth. It's a beautiful hotel and within walking distance of the Portmeirion Hotel and the beautiful grounds. The food is great in both hotels but I prefer the Castle Deudraeth my self. My OH and I spend 4 days a week in this area having a little bolthole in Porthmadog. He adores Portmeirion and will go every week if I let him. Do make time to do the lovely woodland walks as a lot of people don't realise that there is more to the village than the houses and shops and galleries etc. Try a visit to Borth y Gest (about 15 min drive away) it is a lovely Welsh village stuck in the 1950's - Bliss!

My advice would be to walk around Portmeirion as early as possible (I believe you can book accomodation there). Before the coach parties and hoards turn up it's very, very peaceful and a lovely place to visit but by late morning it can be very crowded.
