I recently asked a GP for some advice about a couple of largish freckles I have...one on each hand. She said they were actually solar keratosis and kindly showed me that actually I have quite a lot of them on the backs of my hands...they are just very tiny. She also kindly pointed out that they would get bigger!!!!
Anyway, she said that 'Solaraze' which is diclofenac in a gel would get rid of them for me. You just need to apply a thin film of it twice daily for 90 days and hey presto they will be gone! Hopefully! No, I'm assured they will be!!!
You can only get it on prescription but I just thought I'd let you all know about it in case anyone is interested!

Cuppie,
Is that another description of "brown spots"? I seem to have quite a few on both hands, or are they just age spots that I have I wonder?

Yes Plasmo. The marks on my hands literally look like freckles but some solar keratosis can be a little raised and I don't think they are always brown but can be a milky colour. They are all age spots though and apparently this gel works on them all....

Hi Cuppie,
Of course, you did say that in your initial thread. I have an appt with my doctor next week, so I will be sure to ask him.

Be careful with diclofenac as it is absorbed into the skin and if you are on other medication, you can have an adverse reaction - best to check with your GP or pharmacist.
You can buy Voltarol (diclofenac) gel over the counter now, but only at the pharmacy.
No idea why, but havent got any yet, inspite of being of great age... maybe because I am dark rather than fair?

I think it is quite safe if it is prescribed by a GP. ...which is in fact the only way you can get Solaraze.

If you are on blood pressure tablets, its not safe... but probably fine if you don't have stomach problems....
I imagine Solaraze is a higher concentration than Voltarol, but both are diclofenac. See the link from Patient UK. There are cosmetic treatments for age spots rather than go the NSAID route... but if your GP is happy to prescribe, go for it.

I'm 48 and I've got four - two on each hand. I always always wanted freckles and now that I've got them I'm keeping them! I really like them on me and other people; I think they look sunny!

Your GP is not the only way you can get this gel. Usually you would be referred to a Consultant Dermatologist who would prescribe it for you when the diagnosis is made. Many GPs send you to a skin department if they are not sure of the nature of the "freckle" first. Obviously the gel will only work on solar keratoses.
