Help please.

I have been given a large orchid. Can anyone give me tips on how to look after it? The flowers are dropping off and I am starting to panic. Help......

I am no expert and have been known to kill plants by neglecting them! However, I was given a lovely orchid at Easter which is still lovely! The reason I think is because they need very little water, so are quite happy living with me!

I've had the same one for about 5 years and recently left it in the bathroom window (it's been on the side of the bath for years) for a day and it's wilted completely with the leaves going yellow overnight. All I've done is throw an handful of water into it every few days when I'm in the shower and when I remember feed it. I don't think they need much care but when you first get them they are usually in full flower and if I remember rightly they dropped from mine within a few weeks but there were more buds on the way.

ignore it and abuse it and it will do fine. I keep being given them by people who think I like them and I don't. Despite stringent efforts at extinguishing life they go on for months and keep getting new flowers!!!

Perhaps I am fussing too much. I can kill a house plant at 10 paces. Cannot see any new buds. Thanks for all your word of wisdom and I do agree LadyG the orchid would not be the plant I would choose. Perhaps it knows.

Orchid50 you are the perfect person to know!

Chrissi - perhaps I will move it into the bathroom but there is little natural light.

Oriana,
I think others are right - they certainly need very little water. Someone told me to simply douse the whole pot in lukewarm water once a week and no more. I have been doing that with an orchid I was given last year and adding orchid feed to the water recently and it is going wild. Loads of new roots and two flowering stems shooting up. Let's hope they actually do flower.

Good luck!

I've had one for 2 years now and it is still flowering. Totally neglected. I can usually kill flowering plants off in a week. I'm sure it needs a new pot but think they also like to be potbound. So anyone who knows, would really appreciated.

Tell me which orchids they are and I will ask a friend of mine, she has thousands - late partner was into them, National Judge for the Orchid Society - she now has to look after them !

Wish this one was still flowering.

OH bought it for me over here recently and it is huge. When he carried it home a couple of women stopped him and said what a lovely husband he must be! I just looked at it with dread because I am not green fingered at all.

Anyway the card calls it CYMBIDIUM, Goingbackwards so assume that is its name. I can understand the symbols which appear to indicate it needs sun and shade but how much?

Do appreciate all your comments. Perhaps I should try talking to it.

Don't know what mine is. ~Just says Tesco orchid! it's cream with a pink centre. On the instructions it says that after flowering, cut stem to 10 cm. Did that on one stem but not the other. That one has done absolutely nothing but the others have grown and flowered again. So much for instructions!

Mine is in the window of our garden room. Although it gets lots of light, the sun doesn't actually shine right on it. Seems to work but more from luck than judgement!

I cut mine back following instructions and it didn't flower again on those stems so won't be trying that again. It's looking a bit healthier at the moment and the yellowed leaves don't seem to be dying off. Won't put it in the window again! It was only there because I was spring cleaning and forgot to put it back (knew housework was a mistake!)
