We are going with friends for a week in June in a cottage in Mousehole, Cornwall. I haven't been to deepest Cornwall for over 30 years.
Certain things are on our must see list: The Eden Project (for me) and the Cable and Wireless museum (for him). One of our number is going diving for a day amd there is also talk of a boat on the Helford river.
Does anyone have any local knowledge, particularly,places to eat or drink or essential places to visit?

Hi JanieM,dont have much local knowledge for you at all but I have been there fairly recently and its a wonderful little place with plenty to see and places to visit I particularly liked The Eden Project. Do hope you have a good time.Do you have far to travel there?

We went to St Ives last year (3 days) but boy did we do alot in those few days. Padstow is much nicer than I thought - great walk over the hills, Minnock open air theatre is a must- especially the beach. Lots of clifftop walks, St. Ives is a must too, great restaurants, and then walk along to Porthminster beach and have a lunch at the famous cafe on the beach while you are there.

Hi JanieM - Visited Cornwall a couple of times and stayed in Polzeath. We got the small passenger ferry over to Padstow (or Padstein) as it is know...as Rick Stein has quite a few eateries and shops there. We went to Steins for our wedding anniversary and it was really lovely. If you don't want to spend as much the Steins Bistro is supposed be very nice but not as expensive as the main restaurant. Fowey is a lovely coastal town with quaint shops and super restaurants. The Eden project is unique and definitely worth a visit.

Another nice place to eat is 15 Cornwall at Watergate Bay which is about 2 miles from Newquay. Worth a trek over - especially if you get a table by the window. It looks straight onto the beach. The food was amazing, though expensive.

Avoid Lands End unless you like the overprice, fake-Disney version of the place (which is all it is now).
For Padstow and St Ives be aware you can't take the car into the town (you wouldn't want to, anyway, believe me!), and have to park at the top ofthe town and walk down into it to sea level.
From Padstow, there's a nice ferry across to Rock.
By and large, south/Channel coast is for sailing, with lots of deep inlets of water (rias), and the north/Atlantic coast is rugged and wild for surfing and big beaches.

PS - avoid Newquay. Ghastly.

I love North Cornwall and am off to Mawgan Porth in August. Went to eden project when it first opened and am going to go again this year to see how much it has changed. Stayed in St Ives last year and ate at the restaurant on Porthminster Beach. The food was really fresh and not too expensive. If you want to go body boarding/surfing, then Mawgan Porth is good - just round the coast from Watergate bay, but not so trendy so alot less people there. There is a surf shop to hire wet suits and boards and a cafe and pub. I'm sure you will have a great time - we always do.

We met up with our friends this weekend and discovered the booking was actually a week later than we thought!
However they had bought us all tickets for a Minack performance so there's something else to look forward to!

Went last November for a few days to stay with Rick! Padstow is a nice little place for a wander - quite a few unusual shops. Rick's cafe was great and reasonable to eat at. His Seafood Restaurant is worth a visit - the staff and ambience really made it. The kids can adopt a lobster at the National Lobster Hatchery on the Padstow Quay!! Port Isaac is very small and quaint. Again a walk down to the village itself. I would avoid Boscastle. Very damp and creepy we thought. Thrives on stories of witchcraft etc although worth looking at the flood before and after. St Ives was fab out of season. Eden Project worth a look but some people prefer Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Hi JanieM, I used to live in cornwall, The place offeres everything, however some of the farms have over diversed if you know what I mean. Avoid landsend its crap, be careful driving in mousehole as the roads are very narrow. Just a headsup its not pronounced Mouse Hole, it is pronounced moawzole.
We went on holiday lastyear and visited the lost gardens of heligan, the weren't open when we lived there, and they are well worth a visit.
If you were going for longer I would say pop over to scilly it is a really good dayout.

We love Cornwall. If you like gardens then Trebah which are privately owned are lovely. A nice restaurant at the top serving homemade food and you wander down a hillside, through the gardens to a beach at the bottom - take a towel to sit on as stoney and enjoy the view and an ice-cream before the hike back up. Well worth it, a little piece of heaven. Padstow nice but very busy. My husband, who dosn't do queues', did so for an hour for Rick Steins fish and chips and said they were worth it!
Hope you enjoy whatever you do. We're down early Aug and looking forward to it.
