Amalfi holiday ...
      #394497 - 19/05/2009 20:42

New girl!
Me and hubby are off to Amalfi next month, anyone got any suggestions for places to visit while there. We went about 6 years ago and loved it - so now re-visiting but want to make the most of it.

We stayed in Sorrento last year and went on the Amalfi drive which was stunning. Climbed Mount Vesuvios, explored Pompeii and also Herculaneum which we preferred. Took a boat trip over to Capri and from there went on a boat trip round the island. HOpe you have a great time.

We did exactly the same as Coby! Herculaneum is a definite must do - absolutely fascinating.

Hi Sonia, Gill, and Coby,

Really enjoyed this visit to Italy, had never been to the Amalfi Coast before. The drive on the coast, was amazing, if a little scary at times, very steep, and some of the local drivers had not heard of any speed restrictions. We stopped right at the top looking over the Bay, and went into Positano, the once sleepy little village, which is now one of the most popular tourist spots, wouldnt visit there again, as it was incredibly hilly.

We visited Capri, The Blue Grotto is worth a trip. We also visited Naples, and I have to say, it wasnt my favourite city, quite tatty in fact.

Amalfi is a stunning area of Italy, can get very crowded in the summer months, but would love to go again.

Plasmo x

Hi

We went there years ago and it was stunning, so beautiful.

We went to everywhere mentioned, took organised tours of some of them and gained a lot of knowledge so it was well worth it.

Plasmo will know how scary this was, but we went down the coast on a scooter and yes the drivers are scary. Going down I was terrified, people in the hotel thought we were marvellous to attempt it and wanted photos of us........

You will have a lovely time.

Carsma x

Oh Carsma,

How brave you, I was terrified in the coach, let alone on a scooter, bet you were glad when you got to the bottom ha ha.

Hi, we visited the same places as Coby, also went to Positano (loved it and one day would love to go back) as we were staying in a villa between Sorrento and Postiano.

Capri was the most beautiful place, especially the shops.
Enjoy.

Hi Plasmo, you were brave going to Naples our tour guide warned us not to go because of the pick pockets and said a lot of tourists had been attacked by people on motorbikes. I know all big cities esp. have their pickpockets etc but we have never been told by tour operator not to go to a place, we have usually just been warned to be vigilant.

Coby,

We would not go there again, it really was a very intimidating place, wouldnt recommend it.

We didnt see anything untoward going on, it was just a feeling of really wanting to get back on that coach and get out of there.

Carsma- agree that you were very brave to do the coast on a scooter. We did that drive like others who have already posted on a coach which was scary enough. Scooters were cutting all the traffic up on the hair pin bends. Some of the scooters seem to have their entire family and home on the running board along with the family pet.

Also did capri, pompeii etc. Did a coach trip to Rome from Sorrento but was too far for a day really. Was shattered when we got back. Hotel overlooked the Bay of Napals and looked across to Vesuvius. D's spent entire holiday watching it in case it erupted.

My thoughts... Sorrento noisy and full of motorbikes/scooters, rubbish overflowing bins and smelly!. constant sirens from police/ambulances.

Amalfi drive great (if you dare open your eyes) Pompeii and Vesuvius fascinating and yet at the same time extremely sad. Much prefer Lake Garda

Hi everyone,

My OH and I went to Sorrento a few years back and loved the place. We too did all the 'usual trips' We got a bus to Positano and walked down the hundreds and hundreds of steps down to the sea. Just could not manage the walk back up so we took a boat trip back to Sorrento calling in at Capri and Ischia if my memory serves me right, to pick up other day trippers. It was a wonderful holiday. Next year there are 8 of us, 4 couple wanting to hire a very large villa with a pool, within walking distance to shops and restaurants - anybody got any ideas that won't break the bank or our pension budgets?
Thanks
