Back from my first MoonWalk training walkies!!
      #298964 - 06/01/2009 18:59

Went OK, I think! We walked just over 4 miles in an hour and 10 minutes. No idea if that's good or not, but we'd only just warmed up, so we are certainly going further on our next walk on Sunday.

The new trainers were great, no rubbing or blisters - yet!!!

Only thing is my lower back is now aching a bit, and my knees are a little achy too. Anyone have any ideas of something I can buy to support both these areas???

Thanks.

Good for you tigerfeet..............you can buy a band that you put round your back and, I think, you warm it up first. If you put this on when you start the warmth might ease those muscles a bit whilst walking. For knees I suggest some antiinflammatory gel on before you start and maybe some sort of support. Depends how bad those knees are.

Keep up the good work. Now snowy has invited us all to a party on another thread................as usual I have completely lowered the tone whilst she has been cooking and eating her dinner. But will be good now...........I promise so why not join us.

Hi TF - that's pretty good for your first walk. I used to walk home from work and 4.5 miles used to take a little over 1 hour at a steady pace (and with regular practice!). My lower back used to ache too and if it's any consolation it will ease off when you get more used to it. I think the hot belt thingy would be good though - look forward to finding out more.

Keep up the good work

Hi Tigerfeet,

thats pretty good going, when i lived in london i would get up every morning at 6 am,and walk for 3 miles every morning, before i went to work, it used to take me 45minuets,so for a beginner you done very well, you will feel so much better for it,you should feel the benifit in about a month, does wonders for the blood pressure no to mention your waist line.i used to do a lot of my thinking on my walks, good way of working out problems etc, well done keep it up.

Tigerfeet - that's good going. People often talk about 4 miles per hour being average walking pace, but it's actually very quick. I did the Moonwalk a couple of years ago and it is hard to keep a fast pace for a long time without lots of training. The aches and pains will go as your body gets more used to it.

One thing I (and friends who were training) used to experience is that our hands used to swell up in the beginning. Disconcerting and uncomfortable but it gets better the more you train. It might not happen to you but just thought I would mention it - if it happens don't worry about it. Good luck!

another one is www.amazinghealth.co.uk and go to wheat pads and they have a back wheat bag it is microwavable and is scented with herbs.

Hope either of these two help. If not I just put into google "back heat pads".

Well done Tigerfeet!I did a 5km Santa Dash in december and it took me 52 minutes...I walked all the way.Hopefully going to do the race for life ...so want to try and do a better time.

I have trouble with my ankle...I tore the ligaments when I was younger and it really plays up when I do too much

Walk on your hands, Tigerfeet, then your back and legs will be fine! Remember to wear thick gloves though.

Well done - wish I was doing it with you.
