My Mum lives in a sheltered housing complex on the edge of a housing estate in cambridgeshire, this morning I rang her to tell her to be careful if she goes out because of the ice.
This is my Mums Reply...
' the Warden/Manager has had a letter from head office to say that they are not allowed to clear the snow/ice in any shape or form for fear of being sued'
she also said that kids had been sliding up and down on the ice infront of the main door, so the poor oldies cant go out for fear of falling over
Whatever next will the council stop gritting the roads incase they get sued, or will people stop helping others for fear of being sued.
Sorry girls rant over, now going back to my dinner, and if this post appears twice, i'm sorry I posted it once and it got lost, must be the gremlins Ha Ha.

Strangely enough I had a conversation with someone about the same thing yesterday. He said that if you put grit down and someone falls over anyway then its your responsibility because you made that decision. If you leave it as it is and someone falls over than it " is an act of God"!!!! How ridiculous is that?

That's exactly the excuse our local council used for not gritting the pavements about a month ago. There was an outcry as people had to walk on the main road a the pavements were deathtraps!

Biker Babe..is that your house in the piccie..it looks like my sisters place in america!
I had heard that too...people getting sued for clearing the ice..apparntly, if it ices back over , you have contributed to the ice!

Luckily the H&S in our local council have not read this post and the major roads and pavements have been gritted.

The farmers round our hamlets/villages don't do H and S,
out early spraying grit,and salt around!!!!

Hi Jessie,
My OH and I were discussing the very same thing earlier this evening,as his mum lives in Sheltered Housing and the very same rule applies.
My dad(now retired) told me about this sometime ago,when he was the Health and Safety Officer for our County Council. I don't know that he himself agreed with it,but it was there in black and white.
The same principal also applies to your own front path,if you opt to clear it or salt it,then the responsibility lands at your door if there is an accident,including the postman,milkman or any other visitor. In the case of the post etc you are supposed to put a notice on your gate for warning,or go to the gate and collect your post,milk etc. As for other visitors,if you have made them aware,and they still opt to enter your premises,I think,note,I only think,you are then in the clear.
It's a crazy world we live in,isn't it?
