First of all Happy New Year! Now I need to rant, I bought my son a mini fridge to use in his room at uni for christmas. We didn't buy a fridge before he moved in September as we thought the kitchen facilities would be more hygenic then they have turned out to be. As I bought the fridge for him, he had not asked permission prior to taking it back to uni, (i thought it would be a formality that he would need it physically there in the building to PAT test and say whether or not it was OK. But because he has turned up with said fridge, he is not being allowed to keep it whether he applies for permission or not! He apparently can now only have a fridge if he has a VALID reason, when asked what circumstance would be a valid reason i was told I'm not going to tell you! I know in hind sight that maybe when it said 'if you wish to have your own small fridge in your bedroom you need agreement from the management I thought it was that they just wanted to know about it so that they could check that it was OK electrically and charge the £50 extra on the rent(both of which we fully expected to do) So please other than the communal fridge is totally disgusting and people pinch your cheese can anyone think of what the valid reason might be (perhaps its to keep you own penicilin in)

What a strange thing to happen. When my ED was at Ui her and her flat mates were able to have anything in their rooms apart form candles and pets. It wouldn't have occured to us to check if it was ok. ( she didn't take a toaster bcause the smoke alarm would have gone off )
I know what you mean about the mess in the kitchen. Luckily my ED was ok as her and her mates were always sharing food - though cleaning up always fell to my ED and one other.

Could he perhaps get one of those camping cool boxes and put the ice packs in the communal fridge to freeze. I think you can get them now to plug into the mains (but no need to tell the management). £50 extra is extortionate. Perhaps a valid reason is if he had to keep some sort of medication at cool temp?
Does sound very draconian and an incentive to get a shared house for his remaining years at Uni.

Yes, I know of a situation where they are banned but a friends son has one in his room. He is allowed to because he suffers from C.S. and stores the many many drugs he needs in there. ( he is also very popular with his friends when they want to cool a few beers!)

The point is that the fridges are not banned, my son knows a lot of people with fridges in their rooms, the security guy has got an issue with my son having one because in his opinion he has not followed precise proceedure and has therefore foreited his right to even apply to keep it.

My son did his degree at Christ's College, Cambridge. He was not allowed a fridge etc, in fact very restricted, whereas other colleges at Cambridge had completely different rules.
He would only have been allowed to have a small fridge for medication, which luckily he didn't need.

Does the security guy have the final say mrs_riffty?
Is there a Head of Accommodation that your son could discuss this with or appeal to?
Hope you manage to resolve things.

My D's uni also banned the use of fridges in the hall of residence because it's an old building with an archaic electrical supply, so any electrical appliances are banned because they overload the system. Funnily enough, the hall vacuum cleaners are available for use, so on that basis students do tend to try to smuggle in mini fridges. My D lasted the year without hers being discovered - it was hidden away out of sight.

I think I'd be looking for whoever oversees the security chap. It sounds like someone getting a little bit powermad to me. Perhaps he enjoys this position over young adults. Could you not phone and ask him under what rule he has disallowed the fridge so that you can take it further-I bet he'll change his mind then!

The security chap does sound a bit full of his own power. I would get your son to get a rep from the students union on to it. I am a student at Edinburgh uni (a very very mature, well maybe just old, one) and the union are great at negotiating and always know who to contact
