After my weight gain over Christmas I was full of enthusiasm and determined to get active, I went out and bought a pedometer. Make day one a normal day and see how many steps you do, said the instructions. 5000 steps is a sedendary person. Aim for 10000 - 16000 steps a day. OK, I know I bought it at about 11am and I had been walking around before clipping it to my belt, but OMG when I took it off last night I had only done 930 steps! Thats not sedendary that's being horizontal! So today I am determined to get walking. Does anyone else use one of these?

Oh you did make me smile Whitley.
I used one a few years ago - loved it and it certainly gives you a target to aim for. Its really satisfying when you can achieve the 10000 steps.
I think i'll get a new one. Battery ran out on the old one and even though I replaced it I couldn't find the instructions to reset it.

Hi Whitley
Queen of the pedometer here.
If I don't walk the dogs and just potter in the office and house, then I get around 2500,it's terrifying how little you actually move if you don't actually make any effort. I have a target of 15,000 a day. Did 16,570 yesterday. Today might not be up to scratch because the pavements were so icy this morning it was difficult to walk. Normally by 7.30 i have done 8 - 8,500, this morning it's a paltry 4379.
You'll have to try and get into a routine, it's the only way to do it. Check that your pedometer is recording accurately as well as there is a lot of difference in the quality. I rate Omron as being the best and I've had the current one for nearly 18 months and feel naked without it

Whitleybay....... oh it is nice to see someone else like me. I bought one before xmas (on advice of coronary nurse) as I need to record my steps and let them know when I start my rehab excercise prog next week. I had to aim for between 7000-10000 a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like you I was astounded to see how little I do move about and it certianly brought me up sharp. Now I know I have to get mobile more and more otherwise I am in big trouble with my heart. Yesterday I was on the go 80% of the day doing my "daily/weekly job schedule" that I set up and at bedtime had just made it to 5000!!!!!!!! YYYYYYYIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPEEEE
Now I have to find out how to increase it by a further 2500-5000. Hoped to be able to walk dog 3 times a week but me and ice/snow don't go together. One look at it and one step on it and I can guarantee you that my bum and the snow merge together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus I have to be careful to cover practically my whole face so I am only breathing in warm air!!!!!
I have the answer though...........a treadmill at home!! This way I can use it and watch my Westlife DVD and get really hot under the collar!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have to convince OH that it is a health necessity and well worth spending the money on!!!
Keep up the good work and I hope to see you posting that you have achieved your 10000 steps very soon.. Let me know how you are doing.

Hi Whitley bay,I've just started to reuse mine and yesterday I got up to 10000 steps for the first time ever. I keep checking it through the day and dance round a bit when the count is low.I also had to go for 2 walks to make the 10000 score. I think they really do make you realise just how little exercise most of us do on a daily basis and I'm beginning to think it's essential for me to wear one. Thanks for sharing the advice you got from the hospital Thimble,it helps to know that I'm not being a looney tunes!

I'd check that the pedometer is registering the steps correctly. I had one last year and found when I was walking around the house it only counted about 1 in 4 steps. It wrked better when I was outside walking on the pavement. Try counting say 50 steps and see if it's registering them. I did wonder if carpeting stopped it clicking the steps.

For me to do 10000 I need to walk about 5 miles. Make sure it's in a position to register the rolling of your hip as you walk - you will move diffently on different surfaces so checking you've got it right is important. If it's too high or too low it won't register properly as it won't pick up the right movement. Try zeroing it and walking normally whilst counting your steps to check that it's in the right place. Some pedometers don't count single steps - if you step from sink to cooker and it's only one step then you stop it won't count but if you walk 6 or 7 steps to the back door it will. Mine works this way. If I spend the whole day at home just doing housework I doubt I'd register much more than 1500 steps - it might feel like I'm moving a lot but in reality it's only a few steps from one side of the house to the other.

16,500 step yesterday is equal to 10.76 kms on mine, so that's about 6+ miles. As ChrissFi said, odd one or two steps probably won't count. Unfortunately ironing and soup making have never put many steps on mine either. Put a Cd on and boogie

Chilla 16000 steps a day!!! Can I borrow a dog please? I am very impressed. Dec and Thimble I think we need to be virtual walking buddies, Ill tell you my steps if you tell me yours. I do like the idea of a treadmill, unfortunately no room in the house, and no garage either. I have checked ChrissiFi it does appear to be clocking every step.Flip, 5 miles to get to 10000 So far today 8442, so I might make it! All together now ladies let's sing "Step we gaily on we go, heel to heel and toe to toe"

And if you do the actions, it'll add some steps
Haven't seen Lillie about, but she got a pedometer just before Xmas, if you do start some sort of club, I'm sure she'd like a bit of moral support in the stepping dept.

Chilla I always thought you had to have a pedometer on your waistband. Tried your idea of putting it in the bra..... much better.

This is brilliant - I'm going to have to start getting the train to work and will be walking more - measuring my steps will be the boost I need to make it feel worth while.
The pedometer I used to have was rubbish - it didn't register the same steps when I did the same walk each day - never thought it could just be a cr*p one!
Roughly how much should I be spending for a good one Chilla?

I have just crawled to bed, 10048 steps today. I have arranged to meet a friend tomorrow at 10am for a walk, this is a real turnaround for me as I am usually suggesting coffee and cake!

Wbay you have made me laugh. I have done the same in the past and barely scraped 1000 steps which felt like 100000. Since those days I have got a grip and worked out that about 1100 steps = 1km, now I am waiting for my half price treadmill to be delivered

I have walked every day for years, normally walk 7 miles. The pedometer is a really good idea and once you get the hang of it it really does encourage you to walk.
The problem at the moment is the ice, be careful if there is snow where you live, I slipped yesterday fortunately landed on my bottom so no damage done! lol
Another good thing if you can't get out is one of those stepping machines, mine counts how many steps you have done and is very accurate. Mine also has a tension wheel on it so you can make it harder if you want! They are a little boring but if you put music on its not too bad! They are small and quite cheap mine cost about £30.
The only other downside is that if more the one family member uses it and has a different tension you have a job to tell where you had left the tension wheel. Well on mine you do, it doesn't have any numbers it's just a dial that turns around and around.
Personally I prefer to walk but steppers are great if you can't get out.
You have encourage me, I might get my stepper out today as it is very icy here and i don't fancy another full:-)
Good luck with your steps Camomile

Hope there are no hidden cameras is all I can say! Have a good day ladies and to borrow Brucie,s phrase "Keeeeep waaalking!"

Hi Patsy well I have suggested the Omron, which I have had for 18 months and has been generally thrown about and still works really well. Just type Omron pedometer in to the search and there are quite a few options that come up. There are different Omron ones with differing features around, starting from around £15.00. Some come with a clip for your waistband and some don't, so make sure you get one with if you don't want to put in your pocket. Mine either lives in my pocket or bra and it does actually work pretty well in a handbag unbelievably. Besides counting the steps, it measure the mileage/kms you have done (will have to measure your stride length) calculates how many calories you have burned and has an aerobic count, which means you have to move for a minimum of 10 minutes constantly. If you ever see a mad woman marching up and down at traffic lights or hopping as she picks up doggy doo, don't try and pretend you don't know it's me, I'm just trying to keep the aerobic total going. I like to try and get an aerobic count of 7000 steps in which is about an hours walk.

Thanks Cilla. Camomile has sent me an article from Good Housekeeping and the Omron came 2nd in their tests - probably because the model they tested was £5 more than the winner. I think I'll go for the Omron - I shall get one ordered this weekend

I bought a pedometer yesterday after reading your posts, have walked the dog today and have hoovered etc. have clocked up 4,000 so far. Mine is from John Lewis, £18, made by Gaiam and called Walking Fit Kit with Debbie Rocker. Comes with Audio CD (not played yet!!) also has tiny light on it and a panic alarm! Seems easy to use so far to record steps, it will also tell me how far I have walked and how many calories burned, not really bothered about that part but would like to get fitter and thought this might encourage me to walk more. Will be good to keep this post going to see if we are all managing to walk more. Good luck girls.
