I finally found something I wanted to read - has anybody read anything by Paul Auster?
I've bought The Red Notebook which is a collection of essays but he has at least 11 novels, all of which look really interesting but in keeping with my plan for 2009, I'll check my local library for those. Just wondered if anyone knew of him...?

Hi Ashbee,
I am really pleased to hear that you have found something to read! A friend recommended Paul Auster’s novels to me a few years ago. I checked on my book shelves and found two titles – Moon Palace and The Book of Illusions.
Moon Palace is about a man’s quest for identity in the modern world. The blurb on the cover describes the novel as ‘a meditation on and re-examination of America, art and the self’ and ‘the work of an immensely gifted young novelist’. Although I thought the novel was clever, original and well written, I can’t say I enjoyed it!
Then I tried The Book of Illusions which I enjoyed much more; the author’s narrative skills are brilliant. This novel is also about a quest – an obsession to unravel the mystery of the life story of a great comedian. One newspaper review suggests this novel is the best book Paul Auster has written. I recommend this title.

I read Moon Palace a while ago and really enjoyed it. I've been meaning to read some more of his but so far haven't got around to it. I would like to try 'Tales from the Scriptorum'.

Be sure to read Timbuktu! City of Glass (graphic novel) is a very funky and different experience.
And, after you're a fan, Travels in the Scriptorium is a must!

Thanks, scatterbrain. Have just read his Red Notebook which is non-fiction and I like his style...he records lots of examples of coincidence that I suspect he uses in his fiction as he says it's something he's fascinated by. Got me wondering how many coincidences there have been in my life - so far not a fraction compared to his!
