Deodorants
      #282010 - 17/12/2008 07:00

Does anyone else use the Salt of the Earth deodorants. I started to use it 3 months ago and think it's fab. It has no chemicals in yet works far better than the the conventional anti perspirants. So much so that OH is now using it and my 3 teenage daughters. it lasts for ages. The other great thing is that clothes don't get that stale smell and I can go longer between washing them.

Mine cost £4.50 from Holland and Barrett and the assisstant said it can last for a year or longer

Hi Roly,
What an appropriate name for this post LOL! Does it leave white marks as i use Dove no white marks but have had 3 tops ruined by the dreaded marks.

I don't understand what you mean by 'no chemicals'? What has is got in it then? As I thought everything had a chemical make up.

Loo, you are totally right. I am a chemist by training and used to sell chemicals to the cosmetics industry. Everything in this world is a chemical by definition - even water. Deodorants do not prevent perspiration, just stop the chemical reaction between the sweat and the bacteria on the skin which causes the odour. Anti-perspirants on the other hand, which contain Alumunium Chlorhydrate (the dreaded man-made chemical) actually block the pores and stop the sweat getting to the skin. It depends what you want from a product - odour masking or perspiration stopping!

I've just found that you can get the product on Ebay when I looked it up to see what it contains. The ammonium chemical that it is made of might well be naturally occuring, but could also be iritatating and high pH. Hydrochloric acid is a naturally occuring product in the stomach but I wouldn' want to be putting it on my skin! Not all man-made chemicals are bad.

I use one by Crystal Spring - the same sort of thing as salt of the earth - my first one lasted for a year (£4.99).

Roly, I checked the label this morning - Crystal Spring is Salt of the Earth. OH suggested it after he'd heard it discussed on a radio program and it's every bit as good as I'd hoped - no irritation, no stickiness, no marks on clothes and it works.

You can get rid of white marks with a baby wipe.

I usually do this when wearing a dark top and notice that I've got marks on the outside when putting the top on (if you see what I mean). You have to do it when the mark is fresh - don't think it works on dry marks.

I am allergic to formaldehyde so have to be very careful what I use. I tried one by Tisserand recently, no formaldehyde but had a severe allergic reaction to something in it and haven't been able to use any deodorant since and have to use [at the moment] a 'potent' steroid cream.
Prior to this, I had tried Tom's of Maine, which seemed very good.
