Snow Geese; By William Fiennes
This book is a journey, following the snow geese as they migrate from Texas to the Arctic.
However it’s the author's journey too - from illness to well-being, and about homecomings.
The authors’ descriptions transport you into following the geese through America to Canada.
I found the book, inspiring and tranquil. Thank you Treetop-a very different read than what I was expecting.

I have also not been able to finish this book. I wondered if it is because so much going on at the moment and it is a book I will need to really concetrate on. Have decided to try again in the New Year

Well, I'll start by confessing that I've never been very fond of birds, a bit bird-phobic in fact. However, now i live in Norfolk it's a bit hard to avoid them so I'm learning to admire them from a distance. Also, I've never read 'The Snow Goose' (something I intend to remedy in the future) but I did see the lovely film with Jenny Agutter and Richard Harris. Having said all that I absolutely loved this book. It was a bit slow to get started whcih probably explains why so many haven't finished it but it's well worth persevering. I thought the author's powers of observation were so acute - I loved the description of the quilter's cabin where he stayed in Canada, I could picture it exactly. The other aspect of the book which I found fascinating were the bits about homesickness or 'nostalgia' and how he tied this in with the way he was feeling and with the geese making their journey back to their homelands.
Lovely choice.

Well I have to confess that I really couldn't get into this book at all.Did try a couple of times, but I think with being so busy with everything else and having a couple of books on the go at once,that maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance.And after reading the above review of snoopy56,I am determined to give it another go later on.And thank you treetop for the reccomendation,always nice to try something new.

First thankyou treetops for the selection. I have just finished reading Snow Geese. This book was a road trip of a very different sort. By following the geese, the authors journey is already set in a pattern he cannot change and either has to wait for them to move on or wait for them to arrive. The people he (WF) meets along the way are diverse and interesting but also just ordinary folks. All with a tale to tell, which I also enjoyed. His style of writing is gentle, very descriptive and intuitive. His memories of having the Snow Goose read to him at school stirred forgotten memories for me. When I was at school I had a different view of The Snow Goose, than I think i would have now. So I think I will read it again.
I read this book starting with the idea that it was going to be a twitchers journey - but it was more than that, I was very wrong.

Just wanted to say I have been finding The Snow Geese a bit slow but after the reviews I will keep going! Thanks Treetop. Nannyconnie recommended The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder...It is a truely lovely book to read at this time of the year...about a young boy and a very old Advent calendar...He travels back in time to Bethlehem.....a gentle and endearing book and quick to read as it isnt very thick!
I recommend it..
