Cataracts
      #215559 - 07/10/2008 21:36

Does anyone know if there's an age policy for cataract operations? My mum had an appointment with the specialist last week and he asked her age and then virtually told her she didn't want an operation. It sounded to me as if he'd written her off as being too old (she's 82), but I know of someone of 84 who's just had hers done. I'm inclined to think perhaps she should ask for a second opinion?

While I waiting for the other patients entertained themselves trying to guess who was the oldest - I'm sure one woman was 83. I don't think there is any age limit. IF she wants it done then she certainly should insist.

Could there be any other medical reason for not doing it?

Definitely Mary Mary, my MIL who is 86 has just had one done, and is waiting for the second.
Go for it.

She's very healthy, although she looks quite frail because she's small and has a longstanding hip problem.

My mum has just had hers done at the age of 82.

Unfortunately, because she also has AMD, it hasn't been a success ... but, hey, at least they tried

Thank you, ladies. Mum says she's going to go back to the optician's and take it from there.
