The family are planning a motor home trip through South Africa as a special family holiday next year. Has anyone done it & if so can you give us any tips?

Haven't done a motorhome trip through South Africa, but have been there quite a lot and know it reasonably well. When exactly are you thinking of going? There will be elections there next year, which may make a difference.
Do let me know if I can help you at all.... it's a fantastic place to visit, really amazing.

Lobelia,
Your holiday sounds fantastic, mainly because I would love to own a motor home, and because I have never been to South Africa and would love to go. I hope you have a great time.
ExpatK,
Where would you recommend to go initially? Do you mean that there could be some trouble if the elections are being held next year?

Hi Sorry haven't had chance to get on for a few days. We are hoping to go next July. By then the elections should be resolved & our kids will have taken their exams. We hope to fly to Cape Town & then drive up to Johannesburg

We have driven by car from Cape Town to Durban along the Garden Route. The roads are excellent. Take your time as the scenery is amazing and you should plan to spend time in each town - specially Knysna. If you love wine, there are many vinyards to visit and taste I do not know where you would park a motor home, but you should always be careful of your safety. Why not go by car and stay in the excellent and reasonably priced B & Bs along the coast before heading up to Johannesburg? There is a great book called Portfolio Bed & Breakfast Collection which we have sent to us each year free of charge. They can be contacted on info@africacollection.com. The book contains excellent maps and information.
You will have a wonderful trip. You should include a few days safari in Krugar
If I can be of further help, please let me know

Lobelia - check the very good thread just called South Africa on 15th September - there is a wealth of information there. Enjoy your trip.
