I was drying my hair this morning and noticed that I am getting a few silver streaks in my barnet. Now at the sides they have been there for a while, but now they are coming through on the top as well. My hair used to be blonde when I was younger, and then it started going darker, and I coloured it back to blonde, but that was about 7 yrs ago, I havent coloured it since, so my question is, should I stay put and accept that I'm going silver (refused to say grey) or should I go to the hairdressors and get it coloured or highlighted. Any advice ladies would be greatly appreciated. what with my hair and my weight going bananas I really dont like this getting older lark.

Hi Mrs Hinge. I know absolutely nothing about hair other than I'm staying blonde whatever it costs! I'd have a chat with your hairdresser about highlights, lowlights and colour. I'm not particularly high maintenance but make an exception where my hair is concerned. Good luck.

Well seeing as you've asked, if I were you I would go and get some highlights done at the hairdressers. There was a discussion about grey hair on this forum not long ago, and I think most of us came to the conclusion that a FULL head of silver grey hair could look great with certain colourings.
The thing is grey hair can drain the colour from your face. How do you feel about your grey hair? It doesn't sound as if you have very much at the moment so maybe it’s not worth worrying about.

I think if you arent comfortable with the thought of being grey yet have some highlights done and allow it to blend in 'naturally' and then as time goes on you can decide how yu are feeling about it. I am 34 but colour my own hair and to be honest I could be a total silver fox underneath but I never give it chance to come out of hiding!

Don't go grey! I believe that even on the people whom it suits, it is ALWAYS ageing! I colour my hair myself and it's fine. You are supposed to go lighter as you get older.I have continued to be blonde, 'cos I am fairly pale skinned and any brown shade looks wrong.

Thanks to all, I am actually going to go and get hair done as I dont like the grey coming through. Also I am fair skinned and blue eyed so a darker colour wouldn't suit me, I cant colour it myself as I had a bit of a disaster yrs ago.

Mrs Hinge,
If you can afford it always go to the hairdressers for a colour, some people are really on the ball and can do it themselves at home, but I speak from experience.
I used to colour mine years ago and found that there was such a layering of different colours, when I eventually went to have it done professionally, the hairdressers couldnt believe it.

Hi Mrs. Hinge, I too have silvering round the sides, and a bit running thru, and have highlites still put in, with foils, but instead of having my usual blonde, I have a little caramel thru it too, which seems to give it a bit of depth, plus a coppery tone. I wouldn't give up my highlites just yet, and do go to the hairdessers, as I think they do a better job, like Plasmo says. I'd say go and have a chat with your friendly hair salon, they should be able to advise. Good luck

I used to have highlights but the odd white highlight (definitely white not grey) around the sides was starting to show up a bit too much. As my hair's fairly long getting my highlights done every 6 to 8 weeks wasn't an option as it took almost three hours in total with a trim and cost a fortune. I now have a single colour matched as closely to my natural colour as possible. The regrowth doesn't really show (apart from the occasional white hair) and it's far cheaper too. I wouldn't dare colour my own hair - too scared of getting it wrong!

I love my silver perhaps I'm lucky that it looks ok. Even my hairdresser refuses to colour it! Have had disasters in my teen and twenties colouring my own. A friend training to be a hairdresser once made me a delightful shade of purple which trickled beautifully down my face at an athletics meetig in the rain, my spectating father was not amused!
