I'm another yoga devotee. I have being doing Iyengar yoga for about 4 1/2 years and I love the way there is so much to learn. Yoga is also good for your internal organs, especially the digestive system.
Give yourself several sessions to really get into it Violet. Yoga is non competitive and everyone can benefit. The yoga mantra is "work within the body you have been given".
Let us know how you get on. Foxie x.

I love Yoga. I have been doing Hatha yoga for about 10 months. It is my me time. It gives you a great work out working on all muscles. I do it at home with the help of a DVD by Leah Bracknell, you can work at your own pace to your own level. I t is amazing what a different it makes in just 2 weeks if you do a bit each day. I have been to classes before and they help as the instructor is there to make sure you are doing it properly. It doesn't matter what shape or level of fitness you are as you can work at your own pace. I would highly recommend it. Its up to you what type of Yoga you do they are all quite similar and will all give you a good work out. If you do it at home, I would recommend you get a yoga mat as it is painful to slip in the middle of a stretch (the voice of experience talking!!) There are lots of classes available and amazon has a good selection of DVD's (read the reviews) Good luck and let us know how you get on. Kate x

Violet - give it a try. I love yoga - great workout, but very gentle and also a great stress-buster. Great for mind and body. Different types, so depends what you want from it. I do hatha - not too vigorous! Hope you enjoy x

I started a yoga class yesterday in a nearby school hall. When I first arrived there were just 2 "old" women and a Gary Glitter look alike called Stanley and I wondered what I was doing there! The teacher was very good and more people arrived later, but still only a small class. I was amazed at how difficult the class was but the stretches were lovely, and you always only do what feels comfortable for your body. We had to do breathing in and out of each nostril for a while, which I found a bit strange but then she explained the benefits. If what the teacher says is true, it really is a fabulous work out and I could certainly feel it. We had to attempt to stand on our heads and the 2 "old" ladies were up there like a shot, while I was left rolling backwards and forwards like a distressed weeble! Anyway I shall certainly be going back next week, so give it a go. But try and go to a proper class and teacher. I've been before to a class in my gym but it was too crowded and the teacher wasn't a patch on my one. The relaxation part is the best - i fell asleep at the begining and the end! We had to chant Hommmmmmm at the end, I felt a bit daft but gave it a go! Go for it and try it out, good luck, Bluebella

If you like yoga try pilates. Good for your back and posture. I've been going for couple of years now and I definately stand straighter and my back is a stronger, but find a properly qualified teacher as there are some pretenders out there.

Well done Violet for giving it a go! I'm not sure about all these different names for yoga so not sure which one I'm doing! I did ask and she said some name and pointed to a picture of an old man, so I'm not much wiser! What sort of things did you have to do? Did you do the nose breathing I was saying about? We did quite a few exercises that I'd done in pilates. Did you have to do a tree balance? And chant Hommmmmm at the end???

Hi Violet, No my first class was last week as well!I posted on this thread about it. We start off relaxing (when I struggle not to doze off!) then exercise our eyes, neck & shoulders. Then we do stretches and some balancing. Thats when we did "trees" you stand on one leg and put the other foot on your leg and balance. Did you have to stand on your head - or attempt to!

Hi Violet and everyone else. I've long been a fan of yoga. I originally started with Iyengar when my son was a toddler as it offered a creche but I soon became hooked. I've had several 'breaks' over the years due to relocation and finding good teachers but I think once you've got a fairly good grasp of the basic postures you can easily slip back into it again. I'm currently recovering from major surgery and illness before that so haven't actually attended a class for some time but even now still find the breathing exercises and some of the simple stretches very useful. Even just maintaining good posture is excellent and really helps with any back niggles.
I think that the key is finding a good teacher in the first place as that will set you up for a lifetime of yoga. They vary so much that it can be a bit hit and miss but a good teacher should always make you feel at ease, build your confidence and offer alternatives to some of the more challenging postures. Above all enjoy yourself.
I'm itching to get back to it now!!
