I don't know if anyone is interested, but the Guardian is giving away a series of booklets on a How To Write theme all this week. Saturday's was Fiction, the Observer today was Poetry, and from Monday to Friday there will be Comedy, Plays and Screenplays, Memoir and Biography, Journalism, and Books for Children. Next Saturday they are giving away "The Guardian Book of the English Language" to round things off. I don't know if it will be any good as I'm just back from holiday and haven't had time to investigate, but I thought you might like to know.

Thanks for the tip...I usually read the papers online but I'll keep a look out for the ones I want and spend some money for a change...
How are the writers doing? It's gone a bit quiet recently - is that because you are all busy on your novels?

I've been on holiday for the past two weeks, and I was a bit busy before I went away.
The Guardian are always giving away booklets but this is the first time I've been really interested in them. We have it delivered but we don't get the Observer, so I haven't got the Poetry one, but all my poems start "There was a young lady from .....", so I think sonnets are safe from me. I'm looking forward to the Comedy one. It's something I've never tried.

I got the comedy one yesterday. I have always dreamt of writing a sitcom and seeing it on prime time TV. The tips are by professional comedy writers and I think some are probably quite useful. My only problem is that I don't find too many British comedies funny because I think they are laboured to the point at which I scream "yes I get it now move on", and it is some of these writers who are giving the tips. The Americans write as a team - maybe several of us should get together and try it. Thinking caps on girls. We could be the first internet writing team. Oh well, I'll keep on dreaming.
I got How to Write Plays and Screenplays with today's Guardian. There must be some useful tips there whether it is comedy or drama.

Forgot to mention. I thought a short rest on writing in this section was ok because a couple of funny ones were started in the Your Lives section. I shall look forward to a new opening line if anyone wants to put one on here this week.

I wish I had known about it on Saturday would have got a relative to get me a copy of the paper, if anyone has a spare one I would gladly pay the postage.

Saraw. I think you can get back copies, with the supplements, of any newspaper nowadays. You need to go online to the Guardian and follow their instructions. I assume payment will be by credit card online.

Issi - wasn't sure if the For Writers bit had fallen into a ditch or was just resting, hence the question. I noticed the funnies in the other part - very funny. Just shows how imaginative and clever everyone is... Have you got a setting for your sitcom ...not an internet forum, is it?

Hi issi, have just been onto Guardian web site and found the paper from last Saturday with all the information on about the booklets for free. I do not know why I did not think about it always reading the mail on line.

Hi Ashbee. Funny you should say that - no the setting for my sitcom would not be an internet forum, but it could be in the background. I actually have only a vague idea of what it could be about - still thinking.
