Where is the quirkiest/oddest place you've ever visited, home or away?
      #197925 - 18/09/2008 14:28

Following on from Plasmo's post. Where have you visited that was quirky, or weird, or just downright odd.
We visited Provincetown in Cape Cod nr Boston, and didn't realise till we got there that it was a Gay town. It has a lovely quay where you can go whale watching, and all the buildings were painted with murals, some with naked bodies, but all very flamboyant, and colourful. We saw some great sights like a dog riding on the back of a scooter, and a man dressed in skimpy pink swim trunks on roller blades, and the guest houses has quirky names, like"Boys Town" and "Gay Boys" Guest House, we loved it so much we went back twice.

In 1981 we went to Ibiza and visited old Ibiza Town. I've never seen so many flamboyant outfits, a gaucho, a boy with a turban with large feather (and he was beautiful), a lady in a white lace 'all in one' with no underwear and walking with her hand behind her head so no one could miss any detail, girls with skirts that looked like nappies. It was astonishing as it was new, the 70s was disco but this was more exhibitionists wanting you to look at them.

We went to Paris and visited the sewers museum and in Madrid (I think) we visited a museum on Funeral services and carriages! Totally quirky but very interesting!

Hi gyp, Ibiza sounds like fun, have never been, but its a bit full of hen and stag parties now I think.

I've heard about the sewers museum Diane, but never been, you sound like you enjoy the more dark side of life!! Funeral Services, sewers

My reply has disappeared into thin air?

Will try again....Snowy, I've been to Cape Cod and loved it - very bohemian! Did the whale watching - quite scary but such fun.

Stayed at a very quirky B&B on that same holiday (we'd started in New York, gone on to Boston and then worked our way up to Cape Cod - nothing booked, just went along armed with a B&B book), in Mystic, Mass. The owner was in love with Pigs. Pig shaped pillows, soap, piggy cuddly toys. Even the breakfast toast was cut into the shape of a pig!

Also been to Ibiza town. That was a weird holiday - I was about 13 (and very like Saffy from Ab Fab), parents were in mid-40s and desperate to relive their youth. Ended up in a few of those underground bars with everyone sitting around on bean bags and a very weird smell (which I now know what it is!). All I did was moan about how late it was, and how I just wanted to go to bed - parents reply was 'don't be so boring!'

Also remember being dragged to a nudist beach that holiday - kept my eyes closed the whole time. Nothing more embarrassing, being on a nudist beach with your parents and their friends (who were in their 60s - eeeewwwww!).

Must just add to that re the nudist beach - I kept my cozzie on, under my enormous towel, under a big dressing gown!

We visited Ibiza town a few years ago. Very weird - some very flamboyant characters and a quite a few human statues, totally naked apart from the body paint! One thing that worried us though was that there were syringes lying in the streets and the odd pool of what could only have been blood. We were there fairly early morning so must have been seeing the remnants of the night before.

We were visiting friends in the States - he was in the Air Force - we ended up in a Minuteman Silo - could actually reach out and touch the rocket. You know that feeling when the hairs stand up on the back of your neck ... Been there, done that but didn't think the tee shirt would be appropriate.

Just come back from Seville and stayed in a hotel casa numero 7. Beautiful restored building but a waiter in white gloves serving the same breakfast every morning......please, it was like the Adams family house, half expected "thing" to pop out, wish he had as the hotel had less life than a cemetery. We have stayed in beautiful hotels all over the world but this was the most bizarre. I won't forget it but it was the oddest place I have ever stayed in.

We did a Route 66 trip across America and the plain states are really tedious. Hour after hour after hour of wheatfields. Anyway, the signs on the highway kept telling us about the Barbed Wire Museum, and as this seemed to be the highlight of the state, we thought we'd give it a go. When we eventually got there, it was closed, and we were strangely disappointed (think we must have had too much sun).
