I think you are right - either that, or they may be cutting them 'taller' - I am normally a size 18 in most stores - except Evans, when it comes to skirts, or dresses. I am unsizable there, because the waist is lower, the back longer. Therefore, i sometimes have to opt for Petite ranges, or go up a size. Even then, I may have to take other parts of the garment in, as it looks ridiculous.

Hello Ladies,
Have you tried H and M? I think they tend to be "Trendy " styles but worth a look maybe?

Hi, and thanks, and nice to meet you! Love the quote. I haven't been there for a few years - love the styles, as I am a trendy kind of girl, but the range for larger ladies was a bit limited at the beginning of the noughties. I'll certainly give them another go. I am a bit of a funny shape - somewhere between an apple shape and hour glass, i.e, hourglass from front, apple from side!!! Still, I tend to work around my boobs (best feature on my body), and skim everything else with fit and flare, tailored clothes or Empire Line (doesn't help that I am short, but my new hubby loves my shape)!

I have size 16 trousers from M & S that fit, today I was in there trying on,(or trying to!) some navy ones that I need.I couldn't even get them over my bum, never mind trying to do them up! I have in my wardrobe an ancient cardi from them, size 14 which fits perfectly, even their size 16s now are a struggle to do up.

Maybe that's why the clothes are getting a bit cheaper there. I bought 2 stretchy tops from them for work, and had to get size 20- but the bra sizes are spot on! Hmmm.

I agree, their sizes are definitely smaller (Or could it be that I'm just getting bigger!!). No honestly I've had to go up a size as well and like you other ladies I can still fit into my normal sized clothes that are hanging in my wardrobe. Dosent do much for your self esteem when you try things on!!

It certainly doesn't - especially in this 'size zero' culture. I helped at a fashion show once, and kept telling the models they needed a damn good meal inside them!

I tried on a cardigan in M&S on Saturday - it looked like a comedy outfit as the sleeves were about 3 inches too short....it didn't anywhere near fit me even though it was my usual size 16. OH fell about laughing and I was so disillusioned I refused to try on the 18!

M+ S are missing a fantastic marketing opportunity here. I know if they made things bigger I would buy LOTS! if the were a "size 14"

I think M&S are a bit hit and miss with sizes. I've got two skirts that should be identical apart from colour but there's over an inch difference in the waists. I've also got a size 18 skirt that won't do up and a size 14 that will and they're similar styles and a pair of size 16 trousers that are just right. I used to be able to buy from there without trying on if I was in a rush but I wouldn't risk it now.
Evans are also odd on sizes. I find that if a top fits my boobs it's like a tent elsewhere and I can go down a size or two from what I'd buy elsewhere and it will still be too big so haven't bought from there for ages. The shape of their clothes is very odd.

Agree their sizing is inconsistent. I'm an M&S fan but can fit in to anything between a size 12 and a size 16 (usually a 12-14) and even managed to buy a size 10 (no way!) the other week. Even 2 items the same size can differ, I've had the same experience as you ChrissiFi - 2 skirts, same style, different colours and 1 much tighter than the other. I just have to try everything on now or end up taking it back. Another question - have I got abnormally short arms or are their full length sleeves designed with orangutans in mind? Everything I buy from M&S now has three quarter length sleeves or is petite as otherwise I have to roll the sleeves up - not a good look on someone in their 40's! Sweetpeasue

And the buttons fall off! Never used to happen, are they using cheaper thread, or not sewing on so tightly.
It's a nuisance

So it's not just me who picks the items with the loose buttons! I now check every one when I get home and re-sew.

20 years ago M&S used to be quite generous with their sizes, but not anymore.
I'm still a 10 in NEXT but haven't fitted a 10 in M&S for ages. Guess where I choose to shop?!

Many ,many years ago, when I was in my teens,I worked for a dress manufacturer who made clothes for M&S.They were extremely fussy in those days, would you believe that they even stipulated the size of the stitches? It's true! It really is frustrating trying to find things that fit there now.My daughter bought me a 16 blouse and I had to change it for a 20.I think that we just have to ignore the sizing and just find what fits. However,I'm not always up to trying things on there, will just have to now I guess. With regard to the buttons, for many ,many years now, they have been put on by machine and are not finished off properly.Sewing them on securely when you buy a new garment saves a lot of hassle later.

Wispa - here is my tip for buttons - as soon as you get home, paint over the thread and the button with clear nail varnish.
It will dry and the buttons will never fall off!
Sorry I'm sounding like a balmy old woman who has nothing to do but it is a good one.

I was in M&S on thurs and tried on a blouse sz12 which I am in other stores, and it was too tight around the middle, granted I have developed the "muffin" top due to middle age spread, but I came out of there feeling miserable thinking I know I need to get rid of the muffin but is it really too small?? I used to be able to buy straight off the rack, but now have to try on just in case!
