Does Anybody Buy Their Glasses on Line??
      #196822 - 17/09/2008 08:30

Has anybody started getting their glasses on the internet, how were they, how did you decide the style, how was the fit etc.

I was at the optician yesterday to pick up my new glasses and the bill was several hundred pounds. It was a new perscription so I now only have one pair to wear.

I know I can have new lenses in the old glasses - but fashion changes and its so easy to look old fashion and dowdy

I am used to having a few pairs of glasses to match mood and outfit etc, I simply cannot afford more then one pair at the optician's prices - it is so easy to go over a thousand pounds (totally out of the question).

I have been looking on line, the prices are amazing in contrast. I am seriously tempted to go that route.

Any tips on choosing a website or making sure you get the right fit and that they suit you

I did once before after getting eyes tested and the correct prescription. Cant remember the name of the company, but they send you a pair of your chosen ones to see whether you like them before you buy. If you like the frames, they then go ahead and do them with your specific lenses.

Frames are such a rip-off and to be honest if they are just reading glasses, some of the off the shelf ones are great these days.

I got several pairs of reading glasses once, very cheap and trendy. They arrived promptly and would have been perfect but I think I picked the wrong strength. had tried a friends on earlier and thought I could see perfectly well out of them but that had only been for a few seconds - silly me!!

I discovered reading glasses in Primark. £2 a pair in wonderfull colours as well as plain. I bought a zebra pair, leopard, red, black and brown. Summer had on the leopard ones in her recent photo that she posted, because I had taken them to read the menu and they matched the outfit I was wearing!

We have used Glasses Direct for frames and lenses in the past.
We received good service and frames were great.I remember choosing frames that had a similar measurment number to that printed on the inside of the arm of my old specs...

Also, now, because my specs are rimless and I really like them I have used Cilliary Blue. They post a box out to you and you pop your specs into them...within the week I had my new prescription made up into varifocal lenses and fit my old frames, well, the bridge and arms! The cost of this from my optician was to be £240, even though they were to use my current frame....it cost just over £100 doing it via the web. And, they are really good too!

It really is a puzzle isnt it?
OH has a single prescription, not bi or varifocal and he has just got 2 super pairs with the same prescription from Specsavers for £99...

I suppose that there is so much choice out there that it just means shopping around...
Hope you end up with something that you like and that does the job!

Thanks Mollymandy, suisieblue and loo - good advice and worth knowing as my optician is of the horrible opinion that I am going to need seperate reading glasses soon

But at the moment I am after full time perscription glasses.

This age lark is not all its cracked up to be is it

Thanks Lynne

Our posts crossed, I shall look up both those.

Good tip about the number in the arm of my old frames - didn't even know it was there.
