Does anyone have any recommendations of either self catering or hotels in Rome that won't break the bank? I would like to take OH and 2 teenagers to see this lovely city for a few days in Oct.ED wants to see "monuments" as she is doing ancient history at the mo.

Have you tried tripadvisor website? they recommend quite a few self catering places and small B&B's and give feedback. My OH & I have booked to go in October and I have since found out that hotel prices are set by the government. So there is not really any chance of a reduction. We have booked Anfiteatro Flavio Hotel which is central, includes continental breakfast and is 139 euro's per night for a room. My problem is a reasonable way to get from Ciampino airport to the center. Coach is £100 return, taxi about £40 each way quite expensive for 2 people. Will be really interested in any tips or advice about what to see & do while there. Jen

Hi, i went to Rome in March, stayed at the Amalia, very near St Peters Square, we paid £216.00 for two of us for 4 nights. We used Viator to book our airport transfers, again, very reasonable prices, you can also book your tickets for the sightseeing through them as well.Have great time !

Hi, We went to Rome September 2007,and had a great time. Our first day we went on the Hop on - Hop off Bus,we have found this facility useful in previous City breaks,it starts off from outside the Termini Station. We visited the Coliseum,St Peter's Square and the Trevi Fountain. We also did a lot of walking,so nice comfortable shoes are recommended. We visited the Spanish Steps, and walked up to the upper level and into the Pincio Gardens. In these gardens there is a very interesting Water Clock. There is an excellent view across the rooftops to the Vatican from the entrance to the gardens. On one of our many walks we found the Palazzo del Freddo said to be one of the finest Ice Cream Parlours in Rome. We tried it,wonderful. We have used this site on some of our City breaks. www.alpharooms.co.uk.

We had to go to Rome for a meeting a few years ago. That in itself was a shambles but another story. They booked us somewhere in the suburbs and it cost us a fortune in taxis. Public transport is not great so I would suggest you try and find somewhere near the spanish steps and then you can walk everywhere. Like all large cities, especially capital cities, Rome is expensive and you can't get away from that. The rate of the currency exchange doesn't help either.

Another post said it: try something central.
We were lucky enough to be near the main station.
For JustJenny, from the airport there is a train direct to the main central station , it's easy to find in the airport, quick and far cheaper than taxis! Their fares seemed to be dependent on the way you look! Must have looked like a pair of millionnaires then ??!!
Contrary to another forumer we found the bus service to be very good and easy to work, we did not try the undergroung though.
Generally speaking hotels in Italy are not excedingly good value for money so do "shop" around. We rely a lot on Trip advisor for the comments and we book with either E-bookers, Booking.com/hotels or Expedia.
Rome is such a beautiful and interesting city, I'd love to go back!

You could try a company called octopus.co.uk; we had a lovely trip to Rome a couple of years back and booked with them - lovely hotel just a short bus ride from the centre - double room was about £100 for 3 nights.
