Hi Ladies,
Just wondered if anyone else out there tips their hairdresser? I used to as a matter of course but over the past year or so I have got a bit braver and only tip the ones that I think do a really good job. I just wondered what the etiquette is as I get the impression that the whole helping you on with your coat thing when you leave is to give you the opportunity to tip them? I can't say I blame them as it is a really low paid job, like waitressing etc but the main difference between us brits and the rest of the world is that we don't mind tipping if a job has been well done and a good service provided (Unlike many countries who put a service charge on their bill!). What do you all think?
I usually tip about £2, is that tight (haircut costs £40)?
cheers

Yes, I always tip. For a £40 haircut I would usually tip £5.

I always tip dgt, have to keep them on your side, never cross a hairdresser! My hairdresser comes to the house, and does my OH and me together, so I give her £5.00, I'm not sure if that is tight or not either.
Does one tip a chiropodist? I'm never sure.

Hi dgt3
I always tip my hairdresser - but that's because I always leave the salon satisfied with what she's done. I had my hair cut and coloured with some highlights at the front yesterday and gave her a £7.00 tip which was just slightly less than 10% of what I paid.

I don't tip at all. My hairdresser is very good but at £50 a cut, he earns much more than I do as a teacher and I don't see why I should. As for shampooists, i think it is up to the company to pay their staff properly and not rely on handouts. I didn't realise that people were tipping so much. I do feel a bit mean as I leave, but am a loyal client of about 7 yrs.

Maybe I'm a skinflint but I have never tipped a hairdresser. I don't know but I feel embarrassed to do so. Besides, it costs me a bomb.

Dgt,years ago I would tip my hairdresser £1 no matter what the cost, but then for a £3.60 cab fare I would give the driver £5 and tell him he could keep the change. My Dad pointed out to me how I was tipping the taxi driver more for a cheap fare than I did a hairdresser - now I tip my hairdresser £5

I tip my hairdresser and also the junior who washes my hair - I think the pool the tips anyway so give them 10% between them.
That sounds a bit mean now I've seen it written down! I might have to re-think

Yes I always tip my hairdresser, but suprisingly when I think about it never the person I go to for a leg wax or mainicure. Hairdresser £5 and both ladies a christmas pressie of a bottle of their fave drink.

When the minimum wage was introduced the salon I was using at the time put up a notice apologising for the price increasing and saying it was due to the necessary wage increases. I saw an advertisement for the same salon quoting an annual salary of £25K.
Considering what it now costs to go to the hairdresser I think I pay enough without a tip on top. If i'm happy with the service I go back, if not I find somewhere else.

I am really mean...I give the stylist £1 and the shampooist£1...I didn't realise you were expected to give 10%!

I always give the hairdresser about 10% and usually £1 or £2 for the girl who has washed my hair, made coffee etc.
However I never tip my beautician (I only go for regular leg/bikini wax, and occasional facial) I think it is because she is the salon owner and I feel awkward about it. But if I ever have her staff instead of her I give them a tip.
I hate the whole tipping thing!!

I read an article last year that suggested a good stylist (i.e. a posh stylist) would be offended if he/she was tipped and to just tip the junior who washed hair, made the coffee etc.
However, I have gone to the same small salon for years and always tip the girl who cuts my hair and the junior. I don't give them much though, just £1 each - I may have a rethink.
My hair cut only costs £15 though so I suppose it's ok (I colour it myself at home).
Have some of you ladies won the lottery?? £50+ for a haircut???

I don't tip my hairdresser as he is part owner but I do the hairwasher (anything from £2 - £5). I've been with this particular hairdresser since before he set up on his own. When I had my biopsy op my hair was all matted and absolutely disgusting I couldn't wash it myself, went along to hairdressers without an appointment asked if they could fit me in for a wash only. They not only washed and blow dried it but the salon owner wouldn't let me pay and the girl who washed my hair wouldn't take a tip either. I feel an extra special tip next time I go. I don't tip the person who waxes my eyebrows etc but at Christmas I do give her £20.

I tried a new salon earlier this week and was charged £30.50 for a cut 'n' blow dry. It was ok, nothing special, but I tipped the stylist £5 "just in case" I do go back there. Her eyes and smile really widened, giving me the impression that she thought £5 was a very big tip! I just did it out of habit, but I'm going to think twice in future.

Reading this post, i've realised i'm a skinflint - i so hope my hairdresser doesn't think that but i have only been going to him for a few months now. he charges 42.50 (cash only) and the first couple of times i left him £4 and the shampooist £1 but last week I only left him £3 and I'm mortified now after seeing most of you leave £5! I have to admit I thought £42.50 was quite a lot for a haircut but then again, I hate salons and had been doing my own for quite a while. Thats it - I'm upping my tip next time.

I always tip my hairdresser £3, whether I have a cut and blow, or foils. To be honest with you, I can't afford any more Same as my husband says, did anyone tip you when I worked in a shop, and that was minimum wage

I never tip anybody!!
Neither Mr Ding or I have ever earned a fortune (both of us below this so-called "national average") and when we have been in "service" jobs, we have never received tips for the things we do. For example, when Mr Ding worked for the supermarket "where Mum's gone" he was earning only a bit more than the minimum wage and nobody came in for their weekly shop and gave 10% extra to him!
Why should tipping apply in some low-paid jobs and not others?
Sorry to be controverial but this one gets me on my soapbox!!
