Are you staying in Cork City?? If so there are so many things to do and see. Shopping is quite good and you will get some good buys changing your sterling for euro.
A trip to Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone is a must and a short bus trip from the City Centre. Fota Wild Life Park is another thing to see. But I think you need a car to drive through.
Another bus trip from the City will take you to the ports of Crosshaven and Kinsale which are lovely little fishing villages.
And then of course you have the night life - which is just as good as Dublin. Lots of pubs and nice restaurants.
You will both enjoy it.

Thanks very much for your quick response and recommendations carrie - I've made a note of them.
We are flying from EMA and staying at Cafe Paradiso (vegetarian restaurant with rooms), do you know it?
We went to Dublin about four years ago, loved it, love Ireland in fact....really looking forward to it.

Kinsale is absolutely lovely and would more than recommend a trip. Did'nt enjoy Cork City too many child beggars and completely put me off.

Hi Gem yes I've heard of this restaurant. I have never been though. I live in Dublin and my grandfather was from Cork so I do try and get down a few times a year.
I love the County of Cork and if you were driving I could suggest lots more places for you to see. You are only there for a weekend so I would suggest you go to Blarney and Crosshaven and then Kinsale if you get the time.
Sorry you were upset about the child beggers Chipmunk yes all the major cities in Ireland have a problem with this. They are not all local though - most of them are Romany Gypsies and Romanians and are illegals here. But it can be very annoying for tourists. I would suggest you just ignore them if they bother you.
I do hope you get some decent weather and have a great time.

Hi SL, dont even think about coming back here.
Weather is cats and dogs and flooding everywhere. Better stay put with the sun for another while.

Hi Carrieb, What I have seen of Ireland has been lovely, great people, food, culture. I did'nt mean to be critical and having read my post back I definately came across that way. I found the beggar children upsetting and not something I expected. Cork City itself was lovely with great shops, I'm sure if the government acted and sorted the problem out it would be one of the best ever places to go. Sorry if I caused any offence I did'nt mean to.

Back from our weekend in Cork - had a wonderful time - what a great City with people to match!
We had intended to hire a car to see West Cork, but actually didn't bother in the end as there was enough to see in and around the City in the time we had. As recommended, we visited Kinsale and kissed the Blarney Stone. We also got on the tour bus, getting off at the gaol (which was very interesting). Cafe Paradiso really lives up to it's reputation (even for meat eaters like me).
Also no more beggars in the City than in Leicester, and definitely no children (thankfully).
Thanks again all for your recommendations!
