help please

Can anyone advise me how to deal with a difficult situation regarding an insurance claim please?
To cut short a long story, we made a claim in early May following a leak in our bathroom shower. This is when we discovered that our insurers pass such claims onto another company who send in builders , plumbers etc to 'make good'. Since May exactly 6 hours work has been done - ripping out all sanitary ware and tiles; other work eg a wall supposed to be taken down and rebuilt was bodged. Many phone calls and emails to both the company and the insurance company have resulted in our claim being handled as a complaint ( though we did not ask for this at the time). Most of our calls have never been returned. The insurers will not give us a cash settlement since work has allegedly started and the sum initially proposed goes no way to having the work done by local tradesmen according to estimates we have received.
On Monday I did get a call from the building company enquiring 'what happened to the tiles' for the bathroom - which we had been told THEY had ordered months before and had stored; the caller promised to ring back in 20 minutes and I am still waiting!
So.. I am now really frustrated and fed up, calls seem to get nowhere and the insurance company appear to feel it is up to us to deal with the company they nominate work to.
I've looked on the internet and am dismayed to read that this particular company is the subject of many similar complaints. Has anyone had a similar situation and any advice on where to go from here?

Tell them that you are going to The CAB as well as the Insurance Ombudsman that may bring them in to line, but make sure you tell the 'Organ Grinder' not the monkey

It sounds like something my friend went through, workmen arrived, supposedly to do the job which appeared to be very straightforward. They spent two days making a mess and left having cracked the toilet and created another leak. They denied it, of course, but eventually, after lots of calls and threats from my friend and her husband, the company paid out for them to get their own workman.

It shouldn't have to be this way.
